Asus NUC13ANH with 8TB SATA SSD not recognized by Roon (ref#SIOD9P)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· New Asus NUC13ANH 8Tb SATA SSD internal don't see in Roon

· Netgear RS700 1Gb Ethernet, Wifi7

Samsung 8Tb SATA ssd installed in NUC. Setup today. Roon sees the 500Gb m.2 NVME. Asus Bios sees the 8Tb drive but Roon does not. I have been using drive couple years. Do I need to erase it? Why doesn’t Roon see it?

If I have to I can make it external via USB enclosure.

What do you see in the Roon OS web GUI page?

Can you post a screenshot.

Normally you will need to format a new install drive through this web GUI before using it successfully.

What’s the file system format? The internal drive is only recognized if it uses the ext4f file system of Linux. Else it needs to be reformatted (which will delete all data) as the ROCK documentation says.

So likely UEFI boot mode.

So likely MBR partitioned instead of GPT?
IIRC is MBR for BIOS boot mode and GPT for UEFI boot mode.

That is usually the easiest and safest way to ensure that no old remnants on the disk interfere IMHO. You should be able to do that with the Samsung Magician software.

Assigned static IP to the ROCK on the router. rebooted and started NUC ROCK setup.

Secured Boot disabled and UEFI Boot enabled.

Fast Boot off, Boot USB devices First unchecked, Boot Network Devices Last checked

BIOS Setup Auto-Entry unchecked

Internal IEFI Shell unchecked

USB and Optical checked

Network Boot is enabled.

No User or Supervisor password installed

TCG Storage Security Cunfiguration. Shows the CT500P310SSD8 and P1-PM0:Samsung SSD 870 QVO 8Tb

Tomorrow I will remove the Samsung. Samsung Magician doesn’t run on Mac OS26 Tahoe.

File System is APFS by default. Ex-Fat or MSDOS FAT choices. Will remove, format, and reinstall back into NUC after work tomorrow. Should use Ex or MSdos Fat.

Thanks for all the help, tips,

Hello @Randall_Sanders

Thank you for reaching out! As our community members correctly pointed out, if you are installing an existing drive into a ROCK/Roon OS system to use as internal storage, it must be formatted by Roon to the correct file system (ext4).

Could you please confirm if you have formatted the 8TB SSD through the Roon OS Web Administration Interface?

You can find the step-by-step instructions on how to do this here: Formatting ROCK Internal Storage

:warning: Important Note: Formatting the drive via the Web UI will completely erase all existing data on it. Please ensure your music library is safely backed up on another device before proceeding!

Let me know if the drive shows up after formatting or if you need further assistance.

Still do not see the ssd. If I take the drive out of the ROCK

i can use Disk Utility app on my Mac. Should I just delete its partition then replace in the ROCK and let Roon reformat it? Or do I also need while removed to format it Ex-Far?

Yes please.

Do I just delete the existing partition or also format the 8Tb ExFat?

You can’t format the drive without also partitioning. There is a chance to mess up with partitioning. There is no need for the drive to have anything on it (partition / format). A regular virgin drive like new out of package is sufficient / preferred.

PS: If your drive came prepartitioned and formatted then it must be an Apple exclusive quirk and does not represent the norm.

So what can I do other than put it in external enclosure? When I was using it recently I believe it was AFPS. I might think there was a physical connection but the Asus NUC Bios sees it. Apple Disk Utility could format and partition it either Ex-Fat or Msdos Fat,

What is so hard? Delete all partitions, put it back into your ROCK, follow the guide from there on.

OK thanks for your help

I removed the 8tb SATA from ROCK NUC. Started Disc Utility which will not let me delete the partiton but it will let me erase it choices are Ex-Fat or MS-DOS Fat. Simply deleting the partition was not an option. Does ayone know any way using Terminal?

Yes, it is entirely possible to delete a partition from an SSD, turning it into unallocated space for repartitioning or extending other volumes. This is easily done via Windows Disk Management, the diskpart command line, or第三方 tools

That didn’t work. I will call Apple Support re using Diskpart command line

Apple support has no way to delete the partition without reformatting the 8Tb and installing an OS. Will Roon not recognize the 8Tb in either Exfat or MSDOS Fat? Apple doesn’t support Discpart.

Going price is nearly $1400.00

There is no way to delete the current partitions without selecting a file format.
