Description of Issue

Roon Core on the Mac mini M1 does not recognize any of the USB devices connected to the 2nd Mac mini M2 connected via the ethernet. The only option it gives is to connect to the 2nd Mac mini via Airplay. Think it’s a network issue I’ve reinstalled Roon on the Roon Core machine and trashed the Roon and RAAT folders from the library but still no joy. Any ideas? Many thx

@Paul_Spencer, welcome to the Community. Are both your M1 mini Core and M2 mini Remote connected via Ethernet cable to your Archer router?

Hey Robert yes thats correct 2 Mac’s connected via the switches to the router .

Thanks for reaching out

Thanks Paul. Are they both connected directly to the Archer, one to the Archer and one to switch, or both to the switch? Do you have Roon or Roon Bridge installed on the M2 mini?

Hey Robert. Router direct to Roon Core M1 ,router out to switch and on to remote Mac mini M2. In the workshop with the remote M2 I have a PC and a couple of 3d printers connected to the switch as well. I’ve tried both options on the remote . I was able to work round by installing a Roon core on the remote M2 and that worked great as it’s own system . I could talk to the USB DACs no problem. I’m trying to link the zones and control everything from the “main room” Roon Core on the M1. All other functions of the network are totally fine .

Thx

Paul, two more quick questions.

  1. Is it possible to connect the switch directly to the router and then the M1 Core to the switch? Want to see if there is any conflict with a direct router connection rather than putting everything through the switch.

  2. What Roon software do you have running on the M2 mini? Roon or Roon Bridge? What did you mean by

Did you have to de-authorize the M1 Core to allow the M2 to act as a Core?

Hey Robert regards the software on the remote M2 I had a full version of Roon which allowed me to access my library/streaming and also access the dacs connected via USB . I had that running at the same time as the main room system . Since re installing Roon on the remote M2, Its behaving as a remote for the main system and doesn’t see the local dacs. Just reinstalled Roon again on the M2 remote and trashed the library folders but no luck . I have another switch which I can try and add to the main M1 and then see what happens . Standby Sir .Thx

Hey Robert

Just checked my laptop and added a usb dac to it and opened Roon and all seems good. It has “this Mac” listed and "connected to core " as options . I don’t have this Mac option on the remote M2 . Sorry this seems to be a moving target right now as I’m trying a lot of options to try to fix this .Please bear with me Thx

What type of Mac is your laptop?

Hey Its a Macbook pro M1 OS 13.4 connected via wifi . I’ve tried the M2 connected via wifi 2.4 & 5g and ethernet but no difference. Thx

Hey Robert here’s a couple of photos, I couldn’t upload video, of Roon running on the separate Macs and at the same time. The work around I described earlier.

Paul, it appears that USB devices are seen by the separate Macs (one being your Core) from the two screenshots you posted, or am I mistaken?

I am going to tag @support for assistance.

Hi Robert yeah thats correct . When I set them up like this it’s like I have 2 completely separate Roon systems on the 2 Macs. Both on the same network each but only connected to their local USB devices. It’s seems that this shouldn’t be possible. If I setup the 2nd Mac and connect to the core on the 1st Mac the second becomes a clone of the 1st Mac and can only access the USA devices connected to the 1st Mac . Hope that makes sense.

Thanks again

Hi @Paul_Spencer,

Ben with support here, thanks for writing in!

Have you used Timemachine or any other third-party software to clone your 2nd Mac from your 1st?

I’d also suggest temporarily removing any network switches or gear in between your Macs and your router, and see if the issue persists.

Thanks!

Hey Ben Thanks for reaching out. I don’t remember exactly but I think I just set up the New M2 Mac and migrated certain programs over from a backup of the M1. If I had essentially made the M2 a copy of the M1 would that explain the situation where I can run 2 separate instances of Roon on the 2 different machines without having to switch cores ? Thank you .

Hey @Paul_Spencer,

I’ll follow up with next steps via a private message. Please keep an eye out for a message from me directly. Thanks!
