I’ve found on this forum that there is always someone who will have a counter-proposal. 
I estimate that charging takes less than a millisecond. (A capacitor with 20 to 50 nF is connected to the potentiometers for the tone setting).

Not only Variax - I own a Warwick bass that has a USB rechargeable battery for the active preamp. The wooden control cavity cover has a Mini USB input cut into it.
My Gibson SG has the G-Tune system which needs to be charged periodically.

They do the state fair circuit too.
I shared a flat that had the world’s steepest stairs with a print machinery engineer by day, keyboard player by night. Shifting a 60kg+ fender Rhodes up and down was not fun.
