Indeed you’re right. I’ve been coaching endurance runners for the last 25 years and many still don’t understand the concept of “diuretics” but still want to “re-hydrate” with caffeine based drinks…
The liquid in, say, coffee, is more than enough to replace any diuretic effects. True of almost all supposedly “diuretic” drinks. Source: sister is a biochemist.
I agree, with your sister, but endurance athletes perspiration rates are considerable & a build up of caffeine “promotes” frequent urination causing dehydration with the consequent electrolyte depletion (Hypokalemia & Hypomagnesemia) if not controlled.
UK athletics had loads of research data on the subject but you probably need to be affiliated to access most of it (sorry, of topic again ).
