Audio playback issue on phones and tablets (ref#PF0MYP)

What best describes your playback issue?

· Playback starts, but I don't hear any music

Is there a specific error message you see? If so, please select from the following options:

· Other

Please try to reboot your Roon Server and check to see if this helps.

· Rebooting my Server had no effect, the issue remains

Please try to reboot and unplug/replug in your affected audio device and check to see if this helps.

· Rebooting and unplugging/replugging my audio device, the issue remains

Please open your Roon Remote and select the "System Output" Zone and try to play to it. Do you encounter any playback errors with this Zone?

· I don't have a System Output available, but I'd like to keep troubleshooting

Please try fully rebooting your network equipment

· No, I'm still having trouble

An issue with playback on System Output and another zone often indicates a network security problem. *Check your firewall(s)* to ensure that *Roon*, *RoonServer *and *RAATServer* are allowed to properly communicate

· I'm still having problems / This isn't relevant to me

Does the issue happen with local library music, streaming service music, or both?

· Both local and streaming content are affected

Please try playing content of a lower sample rate (44.1kHz or 48kHz). Do you still have the same issue?

· No, lower sample rates are still affected

What is the model/manufacturer of the affected audio device(s) and the connection type?

· Samsung phone and tablet, Apple iPad

Describe the issue

Unable to play audio using phone and tablets. Interestingly, it worked just fine on the iPad when I first used it. After pausing the music and returning a few minutes later, the Roon app no longer recognized the iPad as an audio device. My Android devices connect to the Nucleus just fine, but neither one shows a local playback option (that is, the device's own speaker). I have spent several hours trying to sort this out. I am a newbie to Roon and would greatly appreciate your assistance. Thanks!

Describe your network setup

Using new Nucleus One with fibre optic wifi

The setting you need to change is dependent on server, so, with a new server you probably need to change the following setting for each playback device

ssdfas

Private Zone should be set to OFF in order to be chosen as a playback endpoint. The default for phones and tablets is ON.

Thanks so much for replying! They are off (“No”), but that doesn’t appear to make any difference.

Hi @crahill,

Thanks for writing in! Could you please reproduce the issue specifically and share the name of track attempted to play, and to which device?

From there, we’ll enable diagnostics from your Nucleus to take a closer look.

In the meantime, I’m curious, have you tested out using Roon Arc at all? Does the same issue occur?

We’ll be on standby for your reply. Thanks!

This happens with any track and on all of my devices (a Samsung Galasy phone, a Samsung Galaxy tablet, and an iPad). In no case does Roon recognize the internal speaker of the device (e.g., when going to Audio settings or when clicking on the small speaker icon). As I wrote earlier, the strangest thing is that it did work briefly, at least on the iPad. Five minutes later, if that much, it didn’t and hasn’t since.
I just installed ARC on the iPad, and I do get sound from the speakers. Hooray for that! I was going to try on the other two devices, but for some reason neither of them is able to find the server despite the fact that they are sitting a few feet from both the router and the Nucleus One. (I can find the Nucleus One on one device by typing the IP address, but it still stalls at “Choose your Roon Server.”
Just can’t seem to get things working as they easily should.

Hey @crahill,

Thanks for the report!

We’re not able to see your Nucleus tied to your account - can you confirm all your Roon devices are running on the same local subnet within your network?

If you pull up your router settings and review your device list, do you see the Nucleus in your device list?

Lastly, I’d see if you can access the webUI of your Nucleus - here’s more info on how to do this:

The Nucleus does show up on the router’s device list. The IP assigned is the same one that I have used to log in on my phone and two tablets. At this moment, for example, I am able to run Roon on my phone. Music is shown to play, but the only output device it lists is the HDMI port on the Nucleus. I have no trouble accessing webUI, and the IP address it lists is the same as shown elsewhere (192.168.1.130), e.g., on my phone when I go to Roon General Settings.

Hi crahill,

Can you post a pic of the Settings / Audio page (might take more than 1 pic).

And here it is when I click on the speaker icon at the bottom…

Hi @crahill,

Thanks for the update! And to confirm, you’ve temporarily disabled your windows firewall or any other third party security / antivirus software on running on your windows machine / remote devices?

If you could, please use the directions found here and send over a set of Roon Server logs to our File Uploader?

Thank you!

Exceptions to the Windows firewall for Roon are in place, but I also tried disabling the firewall temporarily. For some reason, I cannot access the Nucleus via File Explorer on my Windows computer. The log file I uploaded comes from the Windows computer. Note that I first installed Roon on my computer as a test. I then purchased the Nucleus and uninstalled the Roon server software from my Windows computer. Do you think I might need to go back to square one and reinstall the server???

No you probably need to either

  1. Enable Guest Access on the Windows PC
Cannot access ROCK from Windows PC - #6 by Rugby

and/or

  1. Enable SMB 1 access on the windows machine

Spend a couple of hours on this. Turns out, my version of Windows 10 does not have gpedit.msc and will not allow me to install it. Also, the setting I am supposed to change does not appear to exist in this registry. (See the screen shot I’ll supply.) I did manage to confirm that SMB 1 access is allowed, but that hasn’t solved the problem.

You can simply create it. (Your Win 10 may or may not read it, but there’s no harm in creating it)

I added it, but it doesn’t appear to have an effect. At least I learned something new in the process!

Just bought a new laptop computer. I had no trouble enabling guest and SMB 1 access on it, unlike my older computer. Everything but the Nucleus shows up under the Network tab of File Explorer. I also tried disabling the firewall temporarily without effect. As before, I can still get to the Nucleus by typing its IP address on either computer. Would it help to reinstall/reset the Nucleus?

Probably not.

Is your Windows network type Public or Private?

Progress! For the first time, I was able to see the Nucleus on the network (using my new laptop). I will upload the logs, which I was now able to get to without difficulty. I can now play music on the iPad, but the two Android devices still say, “Looking for your Roon Server.” On the other hand, when I click on “Configure Room OS devices on your network,” it finds Nucleus One without difficulty. Click “Done,” and it goes back to looking for the server. (BTW, it is set up as a private network.)
