Audio zones lost

Describe your network setup

Roon Server on iMac i7 2019, Router Fritzbox 7490, endpoints RPi3 and RPi4 with Roon. Ridge and Devialet Phantom II via wireless.
Issue:
I moved on Friday the Roon server from the MMM1 to the iMac and everything worked fine after the move. I switch off my system over night and turn it back on the next morning. On Saturday after switching on the system ( first the endpoints then the iMac), Roon did not see the RPi4 and Phantom (RPi3 was off). I restarted Roon and the endpoints appeared. Now on Sunday same but restart of Roon did not help. Restart of everything did not help. Switching Roon and Roon server off and on in local network setting did not help. I created a new RAAT server folder (as by an older support thread). This did not help.

Other side notes.
I am on Sequoia 15.3.1.
Firewall is disabled
I can play music to system output (iMac).
I can also not play to HQP on my MMM1.
I see all endpoints in my Router setting.
I see the endpoints in the extensions settings and my rooNuimo connects to the RPi4.
I use RealVNC to control the iMac via my iPad.
iMac and all RPis connected via LAN to Router, Phantom II via wireless.

That is very strange:
I just wanted to test if I really can change volume of the system out with the rooNuimo.
I can and suddenly all endpoints reappeared.

That is nice, but does anybody has an idea what is going on here?

It is not very convenient to fiddle always an hour or so with the system until everything works as it should be.

Ok, I could leave the server always on. But that is tough, I was raised always to switch of lights all that need electricity when not in use….

I dared to restart the iMac and all Zone are gone again, even system sound this time. :flushed::thinking:

Even the Roon remote on my iPad lost connection.

Ok, Roon remote from iPad is back and so system sound in the audio settings but I have to enable it again (was enabled before restart).

It seems to be a network issue, iPad is losing connection for a short while, music playing to systems sound also stops and then all comes back again. Somewhere the Roon server is blocked. I have no firewall activated.

Out of nowhere AirplayII devices show up plus core audio and iPad as endpoint.
Weird.

I simply hope the rest will also show up again and then I will leave the system on.
Not a very satisfying solution though.

As predicted, everything showed up again. If it happened on its own or because I clicked everything I could find in MacOS, I do not know.

Another Update:
As I was always losing the end points after reboot and never were able to get them back, I decided to started from scratch.

Deleted all on the iMac and installed freshly sequoia, Roon and all.
All worked perfectly, all endpoints were visible and I could play music to them.

As soon as I rebooted the iMac all end points were gone again.

I tried to move Roon back to my Mac Mini and here it is working (after I allowed Roon and Roon Server network access).

I can connect to the endpoints via Firefox, so it seems that my network works correctly and it is only Roon who cannot see the end points.

I would really appreciate some feedback, as I am still in the return period of the iMac and will send the iMac back if this cannot be resolved.

Thanks

Hey @Daiyama,

Thanks for taking the time to write in and share your report!

If you temporarily disable this software, and use your iMac and iPad in a normal case, do you still see issues?

Another area to review - one of the myriad network security changes introduced with MacOS 15.x was MAC address randomization.

I recommend navigating to your Network settings (WiFi → Details) and checking whether the Mac in question is relying on a Fixed, not a rotating, Private WiFi Address.

Do you have any additional network security/antivirus software active on the iMac? I’d ensure a direct ethernet connection from your devices to your primary router, bypassing all other network gear, and see how things perform. :+1:

Hi Benjamin, thank you for your reply.

I am using fixed ip addresses for the iMac and the endpoints, but I will check the setting you mentioned in macOS.

After the clean install of Sequoia I have not yet installed RVNC, so that is not the reason.

The interesting thing is, when I move the core back to the MacMini, everything works as it should, with all the same network gear in place as with the iMac.

Why everything worked directly after the new installation and one reboot, boom all gone. When fiddling long enough in the settings airplay devices starts to appear as endpoints but not the RPis. That is all so strange.

Edit: No other antivirus software running. I have only installed, Firefox, Roon and my Genelec software. Nothing else.

Hi Benjamin,
did some tests and came very close to a fix unfortunately only close.

So it has definitely to do with the network settings.
When I change ethernet from DHCP to manual all endpoints appear and I can play music to them. Great!
However when I reboot all endpoints are gone again. Not so great! :frowning:
I change back to DCHP and all endpoints show up again and get lost after reboot.
Changing something in the network settings brings them back.
At the moment it seems as the type of network settings is not relevant, but I have to change anything. Weird :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
It is a bit consistent with respect to the MacMini, where I never touched these settings and all worked well with default settings (I guess DHCP).

Do you have a clue what is going on here? I sure don’t.

Thx

Hi @Daiyama ,

Do you by any chance have multiple networking interfaces active (such as both WiFi and Ethernet)? Is there anyu change in behavior if you try to temporarily disable one of them?

Hi Noris,
thanks for your reply.
Wi-Fi was disabled as I use Ethernet to connect the iMac to the Router.
But it is a good suggestion to try to turn of Ethernet and use WiFi and see if the behaviour is still the same or not.
Will try that and report back.

Hi,
I disconnected the Ethernet cable and used WiFi to connect to my server. This also did not improve things wether I used a fixed IP address or DHCP. It was even worse “the trick” by changing anything in the network settings to bring back the endpoints did not work, the iMac never saw the endpoints.

So I decided to stop at this point and will send back the iMac.
I have a perfectly running MMM1 here and only because I like the design of these older iMacs it is not worth all the hussle.

Thanks to Roon support for your feedback here, much appreciated.

I had the same issue: could only ‘see’ AirPlay2 connections. After stumbling around a bit, I changed:
Ethernet (in settings, of course)
Details
Hardware

I found that “Configure” was set to Manual. I switched it to automatic and my endpoints popped back.

Your mileage may differ, of course.

Thanks for your reply, unfortunately I will not be able to test this, as the iMac is already back to the retailer.

P.S. My MacMiniM1 is set to automatic, so my guess is that this is the default setting and I have the Sequoia newly installed, so it should be set to this. But this is just a guess, I will never know.

Hi @Daiyama ,

Since you have sent back the iMac and can’t troubleshoot further, I will go ahead and close this thread. Hope Roon continues to work smoothly with your MMM1 server!
