And fling/momentum scrolling was never fluid, either, nor is it now.
Edit: Well, maybe finger-drag scrolling is slightly better. Not sure because I rarely do that. Main issue for me was always fling scrolling, which was always choppy and still is
Because it’s based on a custom, cross-platform programming framework that was conceived before 120 Hz was a thing. So they have to specifically implement it, which might not be totally simple.
Note how ARC, which is based on the modern Flutter framework, gets it “for free” from the framework.
As @Suedkiez mentioned we have a custom UI framework that was created… some time ago
My hope with this change was to improve the feel and flow of things around lists a bit. Something I didn’t spend time on it this time around was the performance of lists. I would have liked to, but I have several big projects that are trying to make significant improvements in different areas.
Having said that, I’d love any information about when things perf well and when they don’t around this and I’ll try my best to improve things here and there.
I do think, by the way, that on my iPad Pro M2, which also has ProMotion, it’s close to perfect now in My Albums, both finger drag and fling. It was always better than the iPhone, but my impression is that it got better, too, and as far as I am concerned I don’t need anything more on this device.
