Describe the issue

I had three folders set up for regularly scheduled backups. As of today, I'm seeing "Backup failed / Selected drive is full" Yet there is a huge amount of space in all three of the folders. What is going on?

Describe your network setup

Pakedge RK-1 Router; Nucleus is hardwired to Ethernet via a QNAP QSW-1208-8C-US 12 Port Unmanaged 10GbE Switch Twelve SFP+ with Shared Eight 10GBASE-T Ports

Do you have a quota set on the drive to which you are backing up?

No, I do not (to the best of my knowledge). I’m using a Mac Studio computer with plenty of memory. I back up to three places: Desktop, a folder in the Finder, and an attached external hard drive. All three places are showing as full with no more space.

In your photo, Roon is claiming that no scheduled backups are configured though. What happens when you click “view”?

I deleted all the configured backups because I could not (repeatedly) get them to work. I’ve attached a photo of what appears when I click “View” under Scheduled Backups.
Now I have to start from zero again

to set up a folder to back up to. This was a nightmare to do back in January when I had this brand new Mac Studio. Several people in the community tried to help, but ultimately I had to stumble around to make it work.
Can you help me to do this – the instructions are not clear in Roon FAQ.

Hi @Mark_Salkind,
Thanks for writing in to let us know about this issue. I’ve reviewed your logs and found this trace associated with dropbox quite a number of times

[2320] 07/15 22:43:40 Debug: [dropbox] received status code 409, error summary: path/conflict/folder/

This 409 means something was acting on your dropbox files while Roon was trying to run a backup there. If you add in your non-dropbox backup sources and run a backup again is it successful?

Daniel – I was finally able to complete a successful backup to Dropbox yesterday afternoon (it took forever). I’m attaching the photo of the Settings>Backups page.
I’m not sure I understand what you mean by “add in your non-dropbox sources and run a backup again is it successful.” Do you mean to try to run a backup to the sources that I was using when I received the “folder full” messages?
I’d like to set up a folder on my Mac Studio to back up to. To do that, I believe I need to use “Add Network Share” and go through all of that again, no? Can you walk me through those steps sequentially? It’s analogous to creating a watched folder, yes?

Mark

Forgot to include the screenshot. Here it is.

Daniel – ok, let’s try this. Let me take you through the steps I just performed to back up to a folder on my Mac Studio. I’ll attach photos for each of these steps.

  1. I have an existing folder under Macintosh HD>Users>marksalkind>Roon_Backups that I have been using as one of the three places I scheduled to back up to
  2. Under System Settings>File Sharing I have added Roon_Backups as a shared folder
  3. Under Options, I have SMB file sharing turned on, with both Roon and Mark Salkind checked.
  4. I then entered all the information needed under “Add network share”
  5. When I clicked on Add network share, I received this message: There was an Unexpected error: UnexpectedError

What am I doing wrong – or not doing that I should be doing?

Thanks for staying with this.

Mark

Hi @Mark_Salkind,

Thanks for the follow-up, and detailed breakdown of your steps!

Have you also applied the same folder-sharing settings to each subfolder holding your Roon_Backups folder?
If you experience the same issue, could you try temporarily moving the location of your Roon_Backups folder?

What happens if you move the folder into the boarder HD folder? So the subdirectory would look like HD>Roon_Backups (with the proper share settings applied to the HD folder as well) do you have the same issue?

It may be good to setup a quota set - setting a limit for 10 copies or however many you may want to keep.

Let me know, thanks!

After multiple tries, I have been able to create two regularly scheduled backups to folders located in Macintosh HD>Users>marksalkind. I’ve attached a screenshot of this.
However, I’d like to have at least one additional place for Roon backups. I used to backup to an externally connected SSD, as well as a folder on my Desktop. I can’t get either of these to work. I’m attaching screenshots of how I completed “Add network share” for both of these places. What am I doing wrong? the Samsung SSD is connected directly to the Mac Studio, so I don’t know why the path I’ve designated doesn’t work. I also don’t understand why I can’t specify a folder on my Desktop as a path. It’s true that the backup folder on the Desktop is actually an iCloud folder, but even if I specify iCloud Drive in the path, it’s still doesn’t work. Again I’ve been using the Samsung T5 SSD and the Desktop RoonBackups folders successfully since early January all the way through July 5th. What’s changed?
Is there anyone on your technical support staff who is intimately familiar with Macs and might help me through this?
I appreciate your support thus far.

Hi @Mark_Salkind,

Glad to hear you were able to get a few backups squared away.

In the screenshot you’ve shared, you have a few errors that could be causing you issues:

  1. the IP address shows 192/168.1.117 - it should be 192.168.1.117
  2. It also looks like you’ve created a path through your desktop to reach the drive? This isn’t needed, you should be able to route from your IP directly to the drive, so 192.168.1.117/Samsung T5 may be a better setup

Does it work if you use a normal, non iCloud folder? If you take my previous reply and set the path to only your desktop, are you able to then click into the iCloud folder to select it?

Benjamin – Following your corrections and advice, I was able to set up regularly scheduled backups to Samsung T5>RoonBackups and to the Desktop>RoonBackups.

The reason my Desktop RoonBackups folder is in iCloud is because under System Settings>iCloud>iCloud Drive, I have turned on my Desktop and Documents Folders to sync with iCloud so that I can access them across all my devices. Nevertheless, indicating Desktop as the path allows me to backup to the RoonBackups folder on the Desktop.

Thanks so much for all your help. I very much appreciate it.

Best,
Mark
