BBC Radio to Sonos via Roon - unstable

Hi All, does anyone out there run earlier 1st Gen Sonos speakers with Roon and listen to BBC Radio?

I just picked up a Play3 from eBay on the basis it was Roon compatible. (running S2 firmware)

It works very nicely on all streams from Roon, inclusing high-res Tidal, Radio Paradise etc, except for BBC Radio.

The symptoms are that the stream will play for 3-5 seconds, then drop for 1-2 seconds, then play/stop in in this cycle.

I have tried wired network vs. wireless, and selecting the 96kbps BBC stream vs default 320kbps.

BBC Radio works fine if you use the Sonos radio App, but I really want Roon as the single source of control.

Not the end of the world, the Play3 can go back on eBay but would be nice to know if there is a fix for this or is this a known issue?

Thanks

BBC radio should play fine. Some users have had problems in the past but they were usually related to their setup.

I’m moving this to the support thread where the Roon Devs can provide help.

Please add as much detail about your setup as you can - it will help diagnose the problem.

@Neil_Goddard, as requested, please provide details of your setup including your core, network, storage location of your media files, and any messages displayed by Roon. Thank you.

Unable to stream BBC radio stations to Sonos Play3 - audio stream starts and stops constantly - about 3-5 seconds on/off. Streams from Tidal and other radios stations e.g. Radio Paradise, work fine with the Sonos. No error messages displayed in Roon.

Yep, this is a problem for me. The only room that has no issues playing BBC Radio from Roon is the bedroom which has a Sonos Playbar with surround Sonos Play 1s.

Every other room has issues - Sonos Play 1s. It’s an issue between BBC Radio, Roon and Sonos. My RPi 4Bs have no issues.

It’s not network related either. My internet connection is full Gbit fibre up and down, all of my endpoints are hard wired over Cat6 from Dell enterprise switches, and the core (Synology RS3617xs, Xeon E3-1230 v2 and 32GB of RAM) enjoys an 802.3ad LAG 20Gbit fibre connection back to the main switch.

If I want to listen to BBC Radio on the Sonos end points, I stream from the BBC Sounds service in the Sonos App.

Thanks Graeme, I found the exact same thing. BBC radio is fine via to the Sonos App, but doesn’t work to a usable standard via Roon. Sadly for my use-case an older Sonos is not the bargain I’d hoped for.

Not had any issues streaming to my ARC in my garden TV room.

I think the issue is the older devices - the Playbar is relatively new, the ARC newer still and these seem to be OK.

Problem solved - bought a new Google Nest Audio, and this works perfectly with BBC radio via Roon using Chromecast. Sonos Play3 has been put back on ebay. Nest Audio is smaller and doesn’t sound as rich as Sonos, but as this is wanted for mostly speech based radio in the kitchen, this will be perfect. Glad to have Roon control back
