Best native DSD DACs for use with HQPlayer?

You mean NAA DACs?

This thread isn’t limited to NAA DACs but there is also iFi Neo Stream too ? The Innomaker is cleaner though

But yes price then sky rockets after that and not many lol

We need to nudge Jussi to make an AKM/RoHM/TI based RPi4 HAT - at least design one

Even if ‘just’ DSD256 over RPi4 eth input.

RPi4 HAT DACs can be super clean - I have the Innomaker measurements to show it.

So the small space is not a limiting factor for performance.

AH90 is there too but we don’t know how it performs

Cyan 2 arrived here today! Now some testing…

Cool :sunglasses: and waiting now

I am still looking around for a DSD Dac and I was interested to see the Cyan 2 results. Although I gather you cant switch between inputs, without changing the connector, if so, it may not be right for me. I need to be able to take an input from CD player in addition to one from rpi4 with NAA (although currently running ropieee).

I would like any DAC to be balanced and it would need to work well with a class D (amp is NAD M23)

I made a bit of a list of DSD DACs based on this thread. One of the main factors for me would also be the ability to purchase in the UK to benefit from warranties etc. I think that rules out quite a few of the DACs in the thread, although Amazon various stock, so could be an option. I do really like the look of the Holo spring 3 but that would mean importing from the Netherlands to the UK.

The Marantz SA-10 might fit the bill, or the TEAC UD-701N, but I don’t know nearly enough and will need to read up a bit more.

I am semi tempted to buy a second hand RME on ebay…

Did I mention the SM… no I can’t do it, I’ve said it enough times before

Play CD’s with HQPlayer or through HQPlayer?

I probably should have mentioned the SMSL D6, but Jussi mentioned somewhere above in the thread it might not be a good match for my Class D NAD M23. But it is on the list, I promise!

Currently I just play them ‘normally’, from a Cambridge CXC CD transport into the Toppind D90 via optical. I have never tried to include HQPlayer in the chain. I usually rip the CDs anyway and have copies accessible from my roon core anyway.

You could feed S/PDIF output from the CD transport to HQPlayer input…

Cyan 2 gets close to Spring 3 performance. While out of band behavior is similar to DAC 200 (Spring 3 has lower OOB leftover noise levels).

Audio band performance sweet spot is at DSD256 with very nice performance. Going to DSD512, audio band SNR reduces by 3 dB while wide band SNR improves by 12 dB.

Did you test it at 1024?

Unless I missed it, which DAC has it’s sweet spot at 512DSD?

Not really, my Xeon workstation doesn’t have high enough CPU clocks for that.

Some chip based ones, like SMSL M400 and I’d say also the SMSL D-6. And some ESS chip based ones.

And in terms of listening of Cyan2, what does that mean and compared to other Holo models, but also DAC200 and RME?

Thanks Jussi. :+1::clap:
That DSD direct works is a fact or needs also to be tested?

It is discrete design. It only knows one way - DSD Direct

Thanks, I am not so much into all of this DAC tech.

It measures a bit better at DSD256 but that does not necessarily means DSD512 sounds worse?

Of course not. I would still use it at DSD512 for example with class-D amps.

OTOH, you can happily run it at DSD256 and you don’t need to worry if you cannot do DSD512.

Had a blast since i got the Cyan 2 and using it with your oversampling software(HQP). The DAC responds verry well to oversampling. I couldn’t stop listening if i wanted! I will get the HQP 5 bought next month from money i use to sell one of my lesser used headphones.

Btw is there a chance that we could look up songs by name in the future of using the Qobuz streaming function?

You can do that by prefixing the search term with “track:” for example “track:something”.
