Best Streamer without DAC to go with Roon

Bill what software do you use with the Raspberry Pi 3? Thanks Greg

Apparently so. I’ve never heard the USBridge, so I can’t really say.

Ropieee.

Thanks for your kind help. Greatly appreciated.

For a streamer without a DAC, I’d look at a Lumin U1/U1 Mini.
You’ll never look back

I switched to a Lumin U1 Mini from an Audio Alchemy DMP-1 which uses a Raspberry pi board. The difference between the two was VERY small so if you can find a second hand DMP-1 I think you’ll be happy, especially with the cost.

Results are DAC and system dependent, but I’ve found that the original USBridge sounds a bit better than the RPi4 (and RPi3 B+), even when they are using Wi-Fi.

But, if I was going to buy something today, I’d go with the new Allo USBridge Signature. Here are a couple of links for more information:

This is a significant departure from the original USBridge, which was based on Allo’s Sparky instead of the Raspberry Pi. Running DietPi and Roon Bridge, I expect the USBridge Sig to outperform just about everything for this use case.

I use a SOtM SMS200 ultra and highly recommend it if you are a bit more DIY as it takes some configuration and a little bit of computer knowledge. Once you get past that however, it works and sounds great.

Maybe worth mentioning that I’ve heard it pairs beautifully with the Mytek Brooklyn DAC. You Tube has a good review I watched about a year ago.

Hope this helps.

I should add that I’ve been using the USBridge Signature for a while now. I configured it with the optional DigiOne Signature board so that I’d have flexibility to try both USB and S/PDIF since some DACs work better with one than the other. I’m also using the Shanti LPS.

I’ve been super happy with it so far. It’s a great sounding network audio transport, and it looks great too. I can’t think of anything that’s better for less than twice the price.

Yup, USBridge Sig/Digione Sig/ Shanti LPS is a very good combo for the money. Can’t think off better for the bucks?

My current favorite for S/PDIF, AES, I2S DACs: http://www.pi2design.com/pi2aes.html. With Ropieee. The best source I’ve used for the Schiit Yggdrasil A2 DAC (including several much more expensive ones). Will be testing its I2S with a Sonnet Morpheus DAC when all the required parts arrive.
