Both emerged here in the South, but they are quite different in their roots. It is said that Jimi Hendrix would have merged into jazz had he lived. Blues is much "simpler’ and (to me) more musical, but both are great genres.
Jazz music is often much more lively and upbeat than blues music . Jazz is often associated with swinging and swaying movements, lively atmospheres and even abstract, unpredictable noise. Blues however, is melancholic, sharp and slow – and the format of the music can often sound very similar from one song to the next.***

60 Minutes did an episode on Clarksdale, MS, the fabled place where Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil. There is a young man in this failing community who has become a Blues phenom. (P.S. There is a YouTube video with more accurate information about Robert Johnson and how he learned to play).
