Can I take the OS SSD out of a ROCK server and put it in a Nucleus One

My ROCK server is dying, so I’ve bought an early Christmas present Nucleus One.
I know there used to be some Nucleus secret sauce on top of ROCK but I’m not sure if that is still the case. Can I take the SSD out of the ROCK and put it in the Nucleus?

Hi @ged_hickman1,

Not the OS SSD; ROCK whilst similar does not have the thermal management functions that the Nucleus has.

However, it is ok to move over a music library drive if you have one installed in the NUC running ROCK.

To avoid issues, please follow this Roon guide …

I would say yes

You restore a Nucleus device with the same restore image as that of Rock.

Roon, as you say, apply/push the magic sauce, aka thermal management shenanigans from their side to your Nucleus.

The Nucleus One has a fan, so not 100% what thermal management is pushed down. Possibly just some CPU optimisations.

@danny could you add some input?

Edit: FWIW, I did similar a few times with non-nucleus devices when I ran Rock. It was fine in doing so.

Edit2: why not just setup the N1 and restore from backup?

It’s technically possible, but I don’t think it’s good advice as there are these points to consider:

  • The memory solid state storage is from an older device (shorter life span compared to new)
  • The old memory solid state storage not covered by the Nucleus One warranty.
  • Risk of damage to hardware when switching over (ok slight but still a risk).
  • Risk of overheating the Nucleus, until OS is updated by Roon.
  • It’s a faff having to get Roon support involved.

Amen to this

TBH, @ged_hickman1 is best to just setup the N1 as a new server and restore from a good backup.

Ged is talking about moving across storage (RoonOS SSD), not memory (RAM).

And one point not considered above is that the Roon Nucleus products generally have not incorporated top shelf SSD (nor RAM) parts. If Ged built his own ROCK with a Samsung SSD, for example, he probably already has a more highly regarded SSD than the likely commodity grade SSD in the Nucleus One.

One question would be if the old ROCK was installed in Legacy BIOS mode. I suppose new Nucleus is UEFI, so you can’t move a BIOS-installed disk over.

The Nucleus conversion just needs clicking a few buttons in the form these days:

However, overall I’d probably also just restore a backup on the new Nucleus

Thanks all. I’ll have a look at the hardware when it arrives and go from there.

I appreciate that, but how long does it take for Roon support to react to the request?
I guess it could be fully automated these days, which would make it quicker.
Can anyone that done this, advise.

It’s quite regularly a forum topic and I can recall one instance where there was a complaint that it was taking long, but generally it seems to work smoothly, based on what I see.

Yep that was clear and understood, I’ve adjusted the terminology I used.
