Cannot back up to my network share drive since my Mac IP address changed

Roon Core Machine Small Green Computer STi5

Mac Studio M1 Chip 32 GB RAM running Sonoma 14.1.1

A few days ago I needed to reset my router and my Mac IP address changed. I have been backing up to a subfolder within Music named “RoonBackUpsMac.” I had opted to use the “Network Share” by populating “\192.168.1.xx” and replacing this IP address with my NEW IP address. I did also populate my user name. But now I get nothing but error messages. I am fine backing up to a local folder but following Roon prompts that doesn’t work either. Appreciate the help. And yes, I can back up to the SGC but that is not recommended nor preferred by me. Thanks in advance

Description of Issue

Hi @Robert_Furstenberg ,

Can you please share a few screenshots of the IP address that you are inputting? I would also double-check your Security & Privacy settings on your Mac to ensure Roon is allowed.

Hello Noris, and yes, happy to share.

I of course did verify my privacy settings are in order, as re-confirmed by top level Senior Apple network specialist. I will include those screenshots as well along with different methods I deployed to connect to my server remotely. I also went the extra mile to visit “Media & Apple Music” and added Roon but no help.

This issue only manifested after resetting my router which generated a new IP address and was concurrent with install of latest Mac Sonoma OS. I am now running 14.1.2. I rather suspect it could be lack of support for latest Mac OS but you guys would know. I DO know that my bank lacks support on Safari since new OS rollout. Thanks.

Hello @Robert_Furstenberg ,

Are you still having issues with getting this working? It looks like you were missing your password last time, if this is for the Mac, please ensure that you have properly set the correct permissions for folder sharing on the right account. This guide provides some details:

First, may I point out this article is not only quite old and dated but totally irrelevant for my purposes given the components I’m using. My Mac has nothing at all to do with how I use Roon other than (previously) using it to back up Roon databases - and as a remote control when in my office. Aside from that my Mac does not enter the picture other than as a remote control and backup device for Roon backups.

  • The article you cite is so old it still refers to “System Preferences,” when several iterations ago Apple changed “Preferences,” to “Settings.” So what used to be “System Preferences” is now “System Settings.”
  • My Roon Core resides on my Antipodes K22 Player, serving files from the K41 Antipodes server to my Tambaqui DAC. Previously my Roon Core resided on a Small Green Computer, and for the first two years backed up flawlessly using the Network Share feature. No password was ever required. That said, I of course DID try the same protocol that worked in the past WITH the password tied to my Administrator credentials. Failed also.
  • I’d thought perhaps the issue was unique to the Small Green Commuter and my Sonore Signature Rendu, but when I transitioned to the two Antipodes units the issue persisted.
  • I have had remote sessions with a Mac senior level advisor (network specialist, in fact) to no avail. Naturally, having worked with Macs since 2006 I’m quite familiar with how to share files and folders. The Mac tech confirmed I have no “permissions” issues. This was affirmed as I was able to access a seldom used Mac Mini on my same local network without any permissions issues whatsoever.
  • I also have had an exhaustive remote session with the COO of Antipodes, an expert in all matters Roon and Antipodes and he too was stymied. No matter which protocol we used , we got the same “Failed (unexpected error) result.
  • Historically , I would simply point toward the IP of my Mac Studio using “//192.168.1.8” though my IP address has since changed since I’ve gotten a new modem. We also tried the smb protocol which also resulted in the same “Unexpected error” message.
  • The only workaround I’ve been able to achieve is a last resort and far from “ best practices” method by backing up directly to the SSD within my K41 server. In the past I directed all backups to my Music Folder/Roon backups and I’d create redundant backups to one or more of my external drives. And it was fast, effortless.
  • In conclusion I would suggest that when things that worked previously no longer work, the question we must ask is ,”what’s changed?” The only thing I can think of is that perhaps Roon is not fully supporting the newest Sonoma OS. I am running 14.2.1. I suggest this because two network specialists have screen shared with me to confirm my settings are literally perfect and the most highly trained Mac specialist was himself completely stymied. I would add that Roon would not be alone in this respect as one of my banks is unable (unwilling) to support Safari. So there ARE some issues unique to the new Mac Sonoma OS with enhanced security protocols. So perhaps your engineers need to look at how your software plays with the latest Mac OS.

Thanks
