HP 12th gen i7 12 core 32GB sdram, 1TB SSD, Windows 11 home
Networking Gear & Setup Details
Router Century Link C3000Z, connected to fairly new TP Link Deco Mesh wifi, no VPN, Ethernet direct connection from 1 of the 3 Deco Mesh units (there are 3 in the whole house) to Auralic G2.1 streamer, WIfi works perfect in the entire house with many connected devices including when running Roon from any one of 3 windows 11 computers.
Connected Audio Devices
The only connected device for this purpose of the audio system from a Roon perspective is the Auralic Aries G2.1 that is hard wired by ethernet CAT6 cable from 1 of the Deco Mesh devices. The Auralic allows wireless connections to the wifi network, but I prefer hardwired from a sound perspective.
Number of Tracks in Library
I don’t have a tremendous amount of tracks, as I use Qobuz a lot for streaming. I do have a couple hundred CD’s downloaded to a SSD card in the Auralic streamer, but they have nothing to do with the problem.
Description of Issue
I can’t get the Roon app to connect my iPad Pro A2377, 16GB RAM, 512 GB storage as a Remote to any of my 3 Windows 11 computers. All the Windows computers are very new and pretty highly equiped. When I try to connect the iPad Pro to a Windows computer all that happens is the iPad continually just says “Connecting” when I try to connect the two. Any of the Windows computers connect to the Auralic streamer and play Roon just fine over my system with no problem. The reason why I have the iPad is that my Auralic Aries streamer has their own app (Lightning) similiar to Roon that ONLY runs on Apple. Lightning runs perfect from the iPad to my Auralic streamer, just like running the Roon app loaded on any of my Windows computers. I do realize I have to unauthorize any on the Windows computers when trying to connect the iPad to any one of the Windows computers when trying to have the iPad be the Remote. By the way, all the IP addresses are in the same 192.168.68.xx. All Subnet Masks are aligned as well. The iPad used to work fine when I had a NAS device running Roon Core, but my NAS died and since my library isn’t that large, I just want to use a Windows computer as a Core. All I want to do is to utilize my iPad Pro as a Remote connected to a Windows Computer as the Core.
No, you don’t. You can only have one core at the same time, but you can have as many remotes as you like operating at the same time.
Did you unauthorize the pc on which you run your core?
I didn’t explain this very well. I realize I can only have one core at a time. I should have stated since I have 3 computers which all have Roon Core and I if want to try core on a different Core that is running at the time I have to unauthorize it in order to try connecting to another computer. My problem is that no matter which of the 3 windows computers I’m trying to connect the iPad Pro running Remote I can’t connect to any of them. The iPad Pro just says “Connecting” continuously until I shut the Remote down. Again, I can run Roon sucesssfully on any of the windows computers alone, I just want to use the iPad for a Remote with Core on a Windows computer.
In case I didn’t answer this “Did you unauthorize the pc on which you run core?”. I fully realize you can only run one core at a time. Since I do have Roon Core on 3 computers, I have tried to connect the iPad to all three, simply trying to get one of them to connect. Each time if I try a different computer I understand I have to unauthorize one to then authorize another. Hope that helps.
I see.
But what about this: can you access Roon from the Windows computers that do not run as a core? So when the other pc’s only run Roon as remotes?
Didn’t think about trying that. After trying your suggestion, the Windows computer that I tried as the Remote did the same thing. It actually made contact with the Core Windows computer as it stopped playing music as soon as the Remote computer tried to connect. The Remote Computer just said “Connecting” the same as the iPad Pro tablet. Don’t know why it won’t allow the connection to the Core computer.
This might be a firewall issue. I don’t know much about firewalls, but I guess there are settings both on your pc and on your router that should be corrected.
Maybe someone with more knowlegde will chime in.
I did add Roon as an exception as listed, but it still didn’t work. After trying several different things including deleting and adding all apps and programs, including the firewall all together, I found the problem. With McAfee, you have settings as Public or Private network. My settings were automatically set to Public, so I tried changing the settings to Home (McAfee nomenclature) which is the same as Private as it worked. You might want to include this is your documentation along with the information of adding Roon as an exception to the firewall you send to people as it would have saved me literally many hours of trying to figure it out. I found out McAfee won’t allow exceptions for Public networks. I really shouldn’t have had it set to Public in the first place, but on my McAfee software it showed the appearance of having a Private network set up, but digging into the settings I found it was Public.
Good to hear that you managed to solve your issue. Thanks for sharing your solution.
I’m just a user like yourself, so this is not my documentation.
Although I can understand that spending time on figuring out certain settings can be frustrating, it is not realistic to expect Roon to provide detailed instructions on how to configure all possible firewalls on all supported platforms. If Roon would need to do this the resources that would go into this would need to come from somewhere and ultimately that would result in fewer resources for product development.
Is it not the responsibility of the developer of the firewall to document how a firewall should be configured?
