Can't connect iPhone or iPad to Roon Core [Solved - VPN]

Hi there…

I just installed Roon and I am new to the software. Roon did integrate my local music as well as my Tidal subscription and I am able to play music from Tidal and my collection without any issues. Roon also detected my Apple TV as well as 2 HomePod’s automatically.

However, I cannot connect to Roon from either my iPhone or iPad. On my iPhone and iPad, Roon Core cannot be found. And, on Roon when I click on “Configure Roon OS Devices”, after clicking Yes, to “Accept Connections from Remotes” none of the devices find each other. I reviewed a few of the support cases that sounded similar, but I can’t figure out what to do next.

I am using a MacBook Pro 2017 running OSX Mojave 10.14. I checked the Mac security settings and the Firewall is not enabled. I should say that it is a work machine that has McAfee software running on it, that I cannot disable. So, if that is what is causing the issue, I am afraid that I can’t use Roon, as that is my only PC in the house.

Please let me know what I should be trying.

Thank you!

Ali

McAfee may be the culprit with its own firewall.

Are you by chance using a mesh WiFi setup? If so your Roon core could be on a different subnet than your wireless devices.

Hello @Ali_Shafai,

Thanks for contacting support, I’d be happy to assist here. As others have mentioned this might be due to McAFee firewall blocking Roon.

You mentioned this is a work machine, are you by any chance making use of a VPN as well? If you are, I would temporarily disable the VPN and make sure that your devices are on the same subnet range (as in the IP address for your Core and your iOS devices match all the way until the last 3 numbers ex. 192.168.1.XXX).

What Router are you making use of here? If the router falls under our list of routers that need special settings applied that may also be a cause, but my first guess here would be that McAFee is blocking the connection more so than the router.

A simple way to test if it’s the router or if it’s McAFee would be to borrow a computer from a friend (or have them come over) and try Roon on the same setup, if the remotes connect as expected then it’s the Core, if not then it’s likely the router. Please let me know your findings when possible.

Thanks,
Noris

Hi @noris

The culprit was my VPN connection to my work network. Once I disconnected the VPN connection, everything came up.

Thank you so much!
