Can't Set Up Synology NAS

I’ve sen this issue mentioned in other posts but couldn’t see a solution: I am running Roon Core on a Mac Mini, connected to an ethernet hub. I play Roon through a PS Audio Direct Stream Jr.

I just bought a Synology DS216j, and have hooked it up to my ethernet hub. I mounted it in Finder. When I enter the network path into Roon, first i got “User Name or Password is Incorrect,” but now I see “The network path is already in use on your system.” I’ve entered the following path: smb://ipaddress/music/RoonNAS . I also tried using the name of the NAS (instead of the IP address) with the same result.

Thanks - I’d appreciate your help.

PS I’m not looking to run Roon Core on the NAS, just use it as storage. And, I’m non-technical (a music lover).

PS Note that I used the actual IP address in the path, not the word “IP Address”…just in case you were wondering!

Have you setup your DS216 to use SMB 2 (see Advanced settings under Windows File Services)? Not sure it makes a difference but that is what I’ve set mine up for and am having no issues (I’m also running CORE on MacMini connected to Synology NAS via ethernet switch).

Although you’ve had the same results with both logical and IP addressing I suggest to stick with logical name to eliminate future dynamic IP addressing issues.

I had the same issues, as you’ve mounted it already in finder choose the local folder option instead and browse to the mount or enter:

/volumes/“NAS NAME”

I’ll try that.

I set it up for SMB3 - is that ok?

Michael - I can’t say it is wrong but can only say I’m setup for SMB 2 and do recall issues with plain old SMB. My guess (total guess) is that the newer version should be fine. In which case you’ll need to look at other places than SMB.

This was bugging me so I’ve been having a play, I’ve also got a Synology NAS and have smb3 enabled.

What seems to work is entering the username as user@NASNAME

This is a screenshot of mine

Make sure your user can share and read write the share

Turn off jumbo frames too in case you have that on also

Personally I found windows to be more stable than OS X for the core

normally it should work by entering the path as you already did it:
(according to your screenshot)

smb://192.168.111.50/music

User: admin
Pass: ***** (your password)

If this does not work, I’d investigate in other directions:

  • Is smb activated on your disk station?
  • Is access prevented by a firewall?
  • Check user and group privileges to your music share
  • Check if you can access the folder from Finder/Explorer (with the user and password specified in Roon)

If smb wasn’t activated, a firewall was blocking or privileges how could it connect using the FQDN format?
