Chord Mojo 2 - Possible Hazardous Max Volume Issue With Mac OSX

Hi all,

just seen this thread on Reddit and thought it might be of interest.

https://www.reddit.com/r/headphones/comments/1kq97y7/beware_of_chord_mojo_2_serious_problem/

For those not on Reddit, the start of the thread:

While using it on macOS, I’ve experienced sudden, full-volume output (0dBFS) during playback. No warning. No build-up. Just instant, ear-shattering volume that could blow your headphones — or worse, cause actual hearing damage.

Since the Mojo doesn’t have software volume, it would seem that the OP had to have manually set the Mojo to maximum volume, and is using system output or DSP volume.

So, I can’t see how the issue is with the Mojo.

I don’t think the OP mentions Roon. It is a MacOS driving the Mojo 2 via USB issue. Could happen with any player then?

Neither did I. System output is from the PC/mac. Mojo volume is set by hardware on the device; there is no way for a PC/Mac to change this except using DSP. Therefore, if the Mojo output hits maximum volume, the OP must have set it to this level.

I have a Mojo2 and have never experienced the primary issue being reported, nor the sudden white noise during changing source.

As @mjw mentions, the Mojo2 (Mojo) can only have their volumes changed via the hardware buttons.

I suspect the user reporting this, and any that claim they’ve had similar have set the volume too high and then using system output or DSP volumes to attenuate.

If I were to do this, I’d set the system output/DSP volume to the maximum and then raise the Mojo2 volume up from minimum until I had reached a high enough volume. Then lower the system output/DSP volume to normal listening volumes. The result is that there are no ear popping volume levels.

The actual way I use the Mojo2 when not in use with the Poly is to use a fixed output from the source and attenuate via the hardware buttons.

The other issue is white noise static. This can manifest on almost any DAC with a sudden change of input resolution, like from YouTube to Qobuz etc. it’s a change in resolution that is the cause.

Some softwares (Roon, Audirvana) take this into account and give settings to reduce/stop the resolution change causing an issue.

Qobuz probably has similar built in that’s not user configurable.

I forget how long I’ve had my Mojo2 and I do not recall having any issues with it.

The Poly, yes, it fails to update and Chord wants me to send it to them. In all honesty it works as intended and I don’t see the need to update.

My experience with Chord is that they aren’t in denial as my Poly experience confirms this. They know some have issues.
