(just a long-time Roon user with multiple systems here)
That inference does not follow. Roon uses more network capacity in a different way than direct play from an internet streaming service. When playing streaming audio via Roon, the Roon server pulls data from the streaming service as fast as your internet service and network hardware allow, typically one track at a time, and then transmits the same content, now uncompressed, using the Roon RAAT protocol, to the audio endpoint. IOW, overall local network load is more than 2x what direct streaming requires, and very bursty on the streaming service>Roon server leg; some routers and network configurations don’t handle that well. So, it’s important that you provide full details of your network configuration as the Support template requests.
One other thing to look at is whether your NUC is having delays with receiving data from the NAS, maybe because the NAS goes into standby mode.
NUCs go easily into thermal throttle if the internal air cooling path (fan etc) gets clogged with dust.
Unless what you stated it is most likely a network issue. Roon is very demanding for a network.
For example streaming 4K movies is wirelessly possible but still it won’t work with Roon.
Try connecting your chromecast by ethernetcabel l
My main interrogation is why it was working fine on my slow NAS and now with the NUC I5 drops out are occurring…
the rest of the setup didn’t change.
It is probably not dust as the device is brand new and runs in a cabinet.
I will install the ethernet cable on the Chromecast and report back.
If running in a cabinet, what is the airflow like in the cabinet and what other equipment is running in the cabinet. If the airflow is poor and/or the other equipment is generating a lot of heat, the ambient temperature may be increasing to the point where the NUC throttles.
Once, long before streaming was a thing, I put a DVD player into a hifi cabinet and it got so hot that, within the space of 3 years or so it burnt out two laser heads.
It really happens on any track. I was listening to the Mix last night and I was listening to a Bach Sonata recording yesterday morning and it occurred as well.
Sometimes it is a spurious drop out and sometimes it is so long that it stops playing and I need to skip to go to the next track.
Rebooting the Rock or the NUC didn’t help.
I did reset all routers and switches, still didn’t help.
Someone recommended adding a hardwired ethernet to the Chromecast, I will receive the adapter tomorrow.
I don’t understand why it does this now and was not dropping while I was using my Synology DS1513+ as the Roon Server.
Roon ROCK running on Intel Nuc Core i7-1165G7 Processor 12M Cache, up to 4.7 GHz, 16 GB RAM
All tracks on a 2 TB Thunderbolt NVME drive.
Networking Gear & Setup Details
Unifi UDM Pro & Unifi switches, all on Cat 6 Ethernet. No VPN. No Wifi in the system.
Connected Audio Devices
2 Zones set up - one to Chromecast (newest model Chromecast with GoogleTV HD - hardwired with Ethernet) connected to Anthem processor via HDMI and one from NUC (via HDMI) to Control4 Multichannel Amp for distribution to rooms in my home.
I have no streaming services through Roon - all tracks are ripped from my collection of CD’s, in ALAC.
Number of Tracks in Library
20,000 tracks on NVME drive
Description of Issue
Roon randomly stops playing at the end of a track. It will do this after as few as 2 tracks and after as many as 20 or even more. While writing this, it stopped playing a shuffle of tracks by David Bowie after about an hour of listening (I have every album by Bowie so there were many many more to hear!) The next track is cued up on the display but never starts (although it restarts with the press of the play button on the remote). I cannot find any pattern here. It will do this during playing an album in track order, during a shuffle of an artist’s songs, and during Roon radio (which starts after an album finishes). This is starting to get annoying. I have read the forums on this - some others seem to have the same problem, but I can’t find any who have found a solution that pertains to my situation. The only zone I use regularly is the one to the Chromecast - could the Chomecast be causing this? I do not group zones. I am not using HQ player. No Wifi in the system. All locally stored tracks on the ROCK. I have rebooted the ROCK and made sure Server is up to date. Please help me understand why Roon would do this, and how to get it to play endlessly until I ask it to stop. Thank you.
Does the same issue occur if you play to your second Zone?
You could also try setting up a test Zone on your Roon Control device (e.g. a PC, Mac, Tablet or Smartphone running the Roon Client) and seeing if playback is stopping there as well.
With the ethernet cable on the Chromecast, no more dropout although can hear near miss.
When time allows I will install a Linux version on the NUC and run the server again.
So, your connection between the NAIM and the NUC is by Ethernet? Do you use a managed switch in between?
Can you show us your signal path box in roon, please?
Here is the diagram.
As you can see the NAS is dide by side to the NUC and I never had drop out problem while the Roon server was running on the NAS and the Chromecast was wireless at that time.
By “hub” you mean ethernet switch? Please provide a screenshot of the signal path box in roon client. It’s available whenever a track is being played. It’s the small colored dot in the play status bar. Just click on it and a box with the signal path will show up.
Ah, okay, you use Qobuz streaming as a source. And it looks like you have enabled some basic DSP in roon. Could you please try the following and tell us, if something changes.
Play a local music file instead of Qobuz. If possible, also FLAC. Still dropouts?
Disable/bypass any roon DSP filter and volume/headroom adjustment. Still dropouts?
Not yet sure how you actually listen . What is your NAIM exactly? Try to listen without Chromecast. Any dropouts?
Thank you for the reply, I just spent the day yesterday with Roon. While playing back through Chomecast, it stopped spontaneously after about 3 hours. The next song was queued up and started when I pressed play. Then I tried the playback from the ROCK output - it did not stop for at least 6 hours. That is limited testing, but it may be isolated to the Chromcast zone. Is there a timeout or some such in the Chromecast? I can’t seem to find one in the menus. Is this just something I have to learn to live with?
Qobuz is new as an alternative since Wednesday. All my previous listening session are with Tidal and through UpNP for my collection. ( encoded in FLAC )
The Naim unit is a Uniti 2b.
Local playing directly from the NAIM Unitii2b with Tidal or UpNP, no drop out.
Previous setup prior without NUC, I was running through the same Chromecast unit through ( Wireless) and there was no drop out.
Drop out started only when I moved the Roon Server to the NUC and installing ROCK.
