Description of the issue

I take this as an example, but it happens actually to many of my “Complete Works of Composer X” CD-Boxes.

I rip the CDs and add them to the internal storage of my Nucleus. Roon identifies them and tags them correctly (like on the screenshot).
If I search for the composer’s name, these compilations don’t show up. If I search in the “Album Category” they do.

Okay, I thought that maybe the “Various Artists” of these compilations are the problem. So I manually added the composer’s name. But that doesn’t change anything. If I search e.g. for “Brahms” I can see all of my Brahms CDs…but not the “Complete Edition”.

Any idea how to solve this?

Best,
Mat

I think we’d need to see the CREDITS tab of the album. E.g., is Brahms added as a Composer credit?

Yes.

Then maybe the problem is simply the common issue that there are probably tens of thousands of albums where Johannes Brahms is a composer, but the search results are limited to 50.

You could try limiting the search results to albums in your library. It should show up then (at least if you don’t have too many in the library):

Maybe it helps if you use a filter on the search results (possibly combined with limiting to your library?)

Or maybe go to the artist page and limit to your library there:

You could combine this with a filter

I just tried your suggestions. Unfortunately that doesn’t change anything.

Hm. Well, at least you ruled out these possibilities and hopefully someone else or the official support can zoom in on the real cause

Thanks for your support.
Yes, this is a strange thing. As I said before: Brahms was just an example. I have the same problem with some other “Complete Editions”, too.

Can you check if Johannes Brahms is showing as a Composer in this box, DG have a nasty habit of making the composer an Artist

If Brahms isn’t in a Composer tag it may explain

My version of this box isn’t in Roon but I would have corrected it long ago anyway

Yes, he is.

You need to remove Johannes Brahms as a primary artist. This is a performer credit from roon’s perspective, not a composer credit so it throws roon’s categorization algorithm. It’s not clear if that credit came with the box or it is something you added yourself? Roon is able to classify most contemporary performer/composers like Leonard Bernstein properly most of the time with both composer and primary artist credits (although I still find less famous edge cases roon doesn’t catch). But it is not expecting composers long-dead before the advent of recording like Brahms, Beethoven, Mozart etc. to have performer credits.

I can see Brahms has a lot of other arranger and orchestration credits, besides composer, and maybe others as well that are not on that screen, so you may have to experiment if you have come to roon with tagging habits you picked up along the way which worked with other digital players but not with roon.

Brahms is not a selected as a primary artist. If so his name would be displayed next to “Various Artists” in my first screenshot. I once added him to see if that changes anything. I didn’t so I removed him again.

Over the past years I’ve added more than 1500 CDs to Roon. Usually without problems. I rip them using XLD or DBpoweramp and sort them the way Roon suggests (e.g. CD01, CD02 etc.) if it’s more than a single CD. I then move everything to the internal storage of my Nucleus and let Roon do the job of identifying and tagging everything.
That works in 99% of the cases.

This “Complete Brahms” is perfectly identified and tagged by Roon. All is good. It just doesn’t show up when I open “Brahms” as a composer, or search for Brahms.

Search results are limited. Especially if you have active subscriptions for streaming services, but a large and specialized local library only will also do, in Roon then it is very likely such a box-set isn’t showing. Use Filters and/or Focus in the Albums view to inspect your library for albums. As the set carries Brahms in its name, using a filter should work. Focus features a Composer category. If a Focus for Brahms as Composer doesn’t show your box-set, then something about its metadata seems to be wrong.

Yet in the second screenshot that you posted, Brahms is credited as a Primary Artist… I suspect that one or more of the tracks has had this set.

It’s odd that the boxset is not showing up on his Composer page. I have compilation boxsets dedicated to a particular composer with “Various Artists”, and these show up correctly; e.g.:

I have a bookmark that only shows the music from my internal storage. If I use this and then filter for “Brahms” the “Complete Edition” shows up. Same if I choose “Albums” and search for “Brahms”
I just thought picking the composer would show me all of the music in my collection.

Choose Abums, Focus for Composer Brahms. Does it show or not?

Strange…no idea where that comes from.

Some of my boxsets show up properly, some don’t. Same with some classical single CDs.
They are correctly identified by Roon, but to find them I have to search in “Albums” → “Composer’s name” or use my bookmark for “Only Local music” (that shows only my internal storage) and then search for the composer’s name.

Yes, that works.

I have re-imported the Brahms Box and it seems to behave normally

What tests should I expect it to fail on ?

Search returns it OK
it shows normally in the Album view

one comment is that I will have seriously tidied up the metadata so it may be different to yours Also the album names are split by the 7 sub volumes

What tests should I expect it to fail on ?

If you look for “Composer” and then pick “Brahms”: does it show up?

I do like a good mystery

ANSWER = NO

digging

If you look in credits you find 4 composers , associated with variations. In my metadata there is no multiple composers and no reference to the other 3

go to each of the other 3 and the Brahms Box shows up. This is Handel (the Karajan shows the same pattern, see the text, maybe that album was extracted from this box and took it’s credits with it !!)

Indeed it has the ID has associated this with the Brahms box and not the Duo album

Brahms is the only one not showing . Its the only showing multiple credits. SO I edited out he multiple credits

SAVE but still shows multiples

In the metadata preference there is no check for Composer

This has all the makings of a lurking bug
