Connection timeout on xxx.roonlabs.net

Roon Core Machine

Current production Roon server on Ubuntu 20.04 server

Networking Gear & Setup Details

ISP modem, Synology router, Roon Core computer via Ethernet connected to router.

Description of Issue

For the last 20 minutes or so my Roon Core reports timeout with status code 998 on all connection attempts on Roon services under roonlabs.net.

Ping to roonlabs.com, roonlabs.net and download.roonlabs.net return ok, ping to devicedb.roonlabs.net, device-map.roonlabs.net, push-manager.roonlabs.net, discovery.roonlabs.net all time out.

I restarted Roon Core, ISP modem and router, didn’t help. As far as I can see, all other online traffic works ok on my side.

Roon is dead at my side… as it can’t establish that I am ‘online’, it won’t load library and doesn’t work at all.

Oh wow, that’s bad!
:exploding_head:
But likely regional, since it’s working as intended here in Germany…

Yes, so it seems… Did another test… from my iMac all Roon services are reachable, as long as it is connected via VPN to a server in Miami. As soon as I disconnect the VPN, all connection attempts to Roon services on the roonlabs.net domain fail.

So… either some regional issue, or maybe some blocking by my ISP, or maybe even my ISP’s IP range may have been blocked by Google…

I am not sure where to go from here.

Perhaps try changing your DNS.

Unfortunately not a DNS problem; I have a Pihole installed, uses Google DNS, Cloudflare DNS and Level 3…

The IP resolves well… checked against the IP which is resolved when connected via VPN. The connection attempt is what fails.

I have for now my Roon Core server connected via VPN and it connects… Still, this is not a longterm viable solution…

Where does traceroute fail?
It may shed some light who is dropping it.

Ahhh good idea… will check! Hmmm… in this moment my ISP’s support area reports that it is a problem with the public IP… they’re ‘validating’ the issue, whatever that means…

Just checked… it gets dropped by my local ISP (TV Azteca, Colombia). I only hope they didn’t get themselves into problems with Google’s cloud services…

Thanks Paul!! For now I am listening via VPN on my Core server… I’ll close this thread, as it is not a problem Roon support could do anything about. Sorry for the noise.

At this moment all connections are being established correctly once again. How good it was being able to use a VPN on the Linux server as workaround. Didn’t notice any impact on performance…
