Constant Scanning of Library? How do I stop it?

Constant Scanning of Library? I get this message when I click on the indicator.

Adding music to library: Complete But it’s still scanning.

Restart your server.

I have restarted the server several times. I have also restored 2 different backups but nothing has resolved. I understand I have a large library and it takes time to scan after being restored but this is too long. I have waited up to 16 hours and the scanned file totals don’t change but it keeps scanning.

Thank you for your suggestion!

William,

When I first started using Roon I had what I think may be a roughly similar experience to yours: import would get to within four tracks/files of completion (72/76, 134.138 etc) and appear to stall.

Other users far better informed than I was urged me to consider corrupted files. I was very reluctant.

But eventually two of RoonLabs excellent tech support staff looked at the logs which Roon generates, identified - guess what: corrupted files! So I:

  1. redownloaded the Album from the supplier
  2. stopped the server
  3. deleted the old/original Album in Roon
  4. restarted the server
  5. re-imported them

and have never looked back. Now, if I ever have such a doubt I always perform steps 2 and 4. It hasn’t failed so far.

Strongly suggest asking Roon to look at your logs; hopefully they’ll be able to identify the errant file. Good luck!

William,

Please report back here.

The difficulty - if it is what I tentatively suggest - comes in identifying which tracks… are they always the last one, two, four, ten?

If not, does that mean that Settings > Library > Background audio analysis beyond wherever a corrupt file (if that is what is causing this) has or has not been completed?

In all cases I found that Roon tech support can and will find them (courtesy of your logs) and that their advice is to be followed.

I deleted all of the albums in Roon that I had added to the library from the time of 1 week before the problem appeared until today. I then moved those files to another folder on another hard drive. I then exited Roon, Powered down my PC that runs Roon Server, rebooted and I’ve been listening to music with no issues but it’s still just spinning away like before no changes. I think this is impacting cover art importing as well. I seem to see more gray covers than normal.
Any ideas?
Bill

William,

If the hypothesis that Roon is detecting one or more corrupted files is indeed a good hypothesis, and that the corruption is preventing it from completing analysis, then what you experience is exactly what is to be expected, isn’t it - because you need to remove the corrupted file(s), from the equation, download a good version and let Roon analyze a file which won’t halt it in its tracks.

Especially if a potentially corrupted file is from longer ago than one week.

As for the cover art, have you tried Settings > Setup > Clear image cache? Again a server restart afterwards will help.

Do you see anything in Settings > Library > Skipped files?

I found the problem. Malwarebytes decided Roon is Malware!

That day is when my problem started. It’s looking for the images for the music I’ve been importing anything that isn’t in the Roon DB yet does not get found in a local folder. That’s logical, most of the music I recently added was early release promo stuff. (old radio guy)
Next task unquarantine that file. Malwarebytes has become almost unusable to me.
Thanks for your help! It made me understand more about how Roon was looking at the files!
