Delays in search, playback

@support. I have been having a number of difficulties with Roon: Long delays in search for songs or artists, delays in playing a song selected, playback does not continue with next song in cue, and somewhat frequent ‘crashes’ of Roon.

Background: I was an early user of Sooloos and enjoyed that for many years until Meridien essentially stopped supporting it. I installed Roon Nucleus in the Fall of 2021 along with Qubuz and Simaudio’s Moon 280d DAC streaming. I use iPads, iPhone and Mac computer to control my system. QNAP for storage of 7200 albums and 107000 tracks. I have a Pakedge router from 2017 connected to 3 internal networks.

The problems: Over the past year or so, Roon does not easily work. it doesn’t matter what control device I use. There are long delays in search and in playback. Lately playing a cue just stops between songs and does not start again until the play button is hit. It is so frustrating and there are not a lot of professionals who understand Roon AND know internal wi-fi systems. I have shutdown the router. I have shutdown and rebooted Roon multiple times. I always insure I have the latest software.

One of the problems I suspect could be that my devices are on a different internal network than Roon. I know how to change the network for my devices but I do not know how to do that for Roon or QNAP ( If it is even on the network or is hard wired. I dk) Thoughts? Suggestions?

Hi @Bob_Gandossy,

Thank you for your patience and we’re sorry to hear you’re having issues.

Do you have an approximate timestamp of when a crash or playback problem recently occurred or the name of a track that was playing when it occurred? We can activate diagnostics to pinpoint the event and inspect possible causes.

A common factor underlying the symptoms you described above is RoonServer’s upstream network connection. From the most recent diagnostic report available from your account, there don’t appear to be indications of multiple subnets interfering; RoonServer and local Remotes/ZOnes appear to be on the same network.

So, the culprit is possibly third-party security on the network or your RoonServer machine, or issues with the DNS server assigned in your router GUI. If you’re using an ISP-assigned DNS server, many users have found success switching to Cloudflare DNS, Quad9 or Google DNS.

You might also investigate whether QFirewall is interfering with any of Roon’s processes if you have the QNAP firewall software running.

We’ll need to know as much detail as possible about your network topology to efficiently troubleshoot problems in the LAN. Do you have any additional network hardware in your Roon environment, like switches, second routers, access points, etc.?

We’ll keep an eye out for your response. Thanks!

Hi @Bob_Gandossy,

Our Dealer Support team has looped me into the current status of your issue via separate channels.

We’ve examined the most recent diagnostics available to our server alongside the summary of symptoms that you shared via email. There’s a pattern of network timeouts to upstream servers - obviously Qobuz’s servers, but additionally Roon’s device index server, and other essential servers for regular RoonServer operation. I recommend revisiting the steps I previously sent as the first course of action:

I also want to revisit this statement below:

Combining this statement with the dropouts with Sonos devices that you’ve reported in other channels, I think we need to consider the possibility of an underlying network topology issue. Traffic might not be forwarded to the correct location within your local network - including the device announcements required for Remotes, RoonServer, and endpoints to remain visible and stay in sync.

Can you please describe your network setup, including any routers, WiFi access points, and the relative configuration of your RoonServer, Roon Remotes, and endpoints?

The more we know, the more efficiently we can troubleshoot the issue. Thanks!
