Devialet stutters and then stops

What about the firewall in Windows? Have you tried disabling it? Or any of the other ‘security’ mechanisms in Windows? An exception in the antivirus app for the Roon process or even the whole Roon folder.

Fwiw, I have had quite good success from using Google Wifi pucks mesh system. Not a single issue so far with wifi streaming high res from my downstairs computer to my Devialet upstairs.

Hi @Jonathan_Waller ----- Thank you for the report and the continued feedback here. Sorry to hear of the troubles.

Just to iterate a bit. As it stands you currently have both your Roon core (PC Win10 64bit) and Devialet Expert 200 both directly connected to your Virgin media superhub 2 router but are still experiencing this stuttering behavior after a couple of seconds.

Moving forward, may I kindly ask you to please provide the following:

  1. Can you verify for me how your NAS is being accessed across your network. Is it mounted to the router as well? Please also confirm which model NAS you are using by Synology.

  2. During your troubleshooting of this behavior have you tried testing with some locally stored content on your PC, temporarily bypassing the NAS?

  3. Can you post a screenshot of your signal path leaving Roon when you make this observation (i.e stuttering).

-Eric

Hi Eric

Thanks for your reply. In answer to you questions, the NAS is a Synology ds213j and it is mounted to the superhub router.

Yes I have tried setting up just one album locally on the PC bypassing the NAS and the stuttering behaviour is exactly the same. It is also the same when playing tracks from Tidal.

I’ve also tried playing from Roon to my Linn DS via airplay and that shows no such problems.

I’ll get that screenshot of the signal path for you and post it tomorrow if I get a chance.

You could try using a switch between the PC and the Dev, eliminate the Router. I"m always wary about large ISP provided hardware.

Good suggestion, but the OP had said he can stream to the Devialet over the same network setup using Devialets air driver and from various sources.

One would hope that the same hardware/setup should also work with Roon in that case? Not ruling it out - it’s worth trying…

I’m not sure whether the combination of Roon plus Devialets AIR driver had been tried or not? In theory if this worked but not Roons AIR it might narrow things down?

Have glanced through the previous posts but can not see whether you had previously used, or tried Devialet AIR, to stream at any time. If so it is essential that you disenable this, or even remove it if using the new ROON/AIR. AIR and ROON/AIR are not good bedfellows as I found out to my cost when trying (unknowingly at the time) to run both together on my PC! Once I had removed Devialet AIR, all worked fine. This might be a red herring, but any info when facing a problem of this sort may be of help.

I now run ROON from a ROCK enabled NUC and that works well.

@David_Payne,
Thanks for the suggestion but yes I have tried disabling AIR, quitting AIR and even uninstalling AIR entirely but has no effect on the problem.

One thing I haven’t tried is playing Roon over Devaliet’s AIR as opposed to Roon’s version. Will give that a try but probably won’t get a chance until tomorrow now.

Eric,

Hope these help to explain the problem. Here is a screenshot showing the signal path when the stuttering occurs:

Also here is an extract of the log at the time of the stuttering:

Hi Steve

Just tried playing Roon over Devaliet Air instead of Roon’s own Air implementation. Roon over Devaliet Air works flawlessly. The signal path shows as high quality though not lossless as it does with Roon Air. Not sure why that is…

Jonathan

Need exclusive mode set on the AIR driver zone. Or you’ve selected core audio rather than the air driver itself. That’s my guesses. It should definitely run as lossless.

Aha - thanks!

Ok let’s try this as a @support request.

When playing Roon through my Devialet Expert 200 the sound plays for a minute or two then crackles and stops.

Setup:
Windows 10 64 bit PC - 8GB RAM, 500GB HDD. F-Secure antivirus (with Roon exception set to allow it to access internet), Windows Firewall (also with exception set for Roon).

PC connected via Cat5e to VirginMedia Superhub2 router.

Devialet connected via CAT5e to Superhub2.

Less than 500 albums stored in library. Also connected to Tidal account.

Crackling and stopping behaviour exactly the same regardless of where the audio files are stored, or whether Tidal files being played. Devialet Air application disabled or quit when running Roon (no effect either way).

Audio works perfectly however via Devialet Air - including when Roon set to use Devialet Air.

Increasing buffer size means Roon plays for longer before crackles set in but no setting stops the problem altogether. (using Roon Air).

Any help appreciated.

Thanks.

Need @support as well.

I am having a similar problem, the sound will crackle and then stop but on the Roon application it shows at playing. If I pause and press play again the sound resumes. This has become really bad with build 247. I did not have much problems with the build before.

Hi @Gustavo_Gabaldon ---- As I have asked others in this thread, may I kindly ask you to please provide me with the following:

  1. My assumption is that you are also making use of the Expert200. Please confirm.

  2. Please provide insight into how the Devialet is being accessed across your network. The better sense I have of what the chain of communication looks like and the devices involved with getting music from Roon to the endpoint will help in narrowing down any variables that can potentially be having influence on this behavior.

-Eric

Hi @Jonathan_Waller ---- Thank you for the follow up and my apologies for the slow response.

Moving forward, I would recommend trying the following to see if we can trigger a change in behavior here.

  1. While I understand that you have security exceptions in place for your F-Secure antivirus application and Windows firewall, I would encourage you to disable these two functions completely (temporarily of course), just to see if this doesn’t change the way the Expert200 functions.

  2. I agree with Daniel’s suggestion in the post above as I am warry as well in regard to ISP provided hardware. If you have the means to test with another router, I would suggest giving it a go, as this the only variable that we have not explored yet.

-Eric

Hello Eric,

  1. It’s an Expert D400

  2. The D400 is connected to a network witch via Ethernet cable. Connected to the same switch there is a SonicTransporter AP, where RoonServer is running.

As I said before, it was basically working fine with build 242 but the problem got bad with build 247.

Thanks.

Hi Eric

Ok, I have tried disabling ALL security features on my PC. This has no effect on the problem at all.

I don’t know whether I can test with another router - I’ll look into it. However bear in mind that all of my hardware works flawlessly with Devaliet Air so I struggle to see why it would work with that and not Roon Air.

No-one has asked to see any of the log files - are these of no use in such situations?

Thanks

Jonathan

Eric

Spent about 1.5 hours trying to reconfigure an old router as a network switch but couldn’t get to work so cannot test that I’m afraid. However as stated above current hardware works with everything else.
