I am successfully using device volume option on several components including a Squeezebox Touch and a Chromecast Audio.
However on my Cambridge CXN v1, although the Roon app shows I have selected the device volume, using the device volume slider has no effect on level, ie it is still in fixed volume mode.
I have the CXNv2 and I have noticed that the volume slider in Roon only works when my Cambridge is connected through its RCA output. Not digitally.

Thomas, the manual for this device shows a number of different settings that may affect volume control. On page 7 of the manual. How are you connecting it to your core computer?
same here then. SO you found no remedy? I have the squeezebox and the CXN connected to an external DAC. Oddly the Squeezebox device vol works just fine via DAc to Roon, unlike the CXN.
I think those settings refer to using CXN as digital pre amp whereas I am using as a dig trasnport to external DAC. As for connection to core computer- that’s my Imac and it’s a wifi connection. thanks

So, the v1 is not Roon Ready, is that right? What kind of transport between your iMac and the CXN are you using? Airplay? What else is there?
So I’m guessing that using it as a streamer-only with Airplay doesn’t actually support device volume control, and you should use the DSP Volume control setting in Roon setup. Which is fine; it’s technically perfect.

I see that if you google “Roon Airplay Device Volume”, a number of posts come up which may be interesting.
Both the SB Touch and Chromecast are using internal DSP which is available to Roon to use. The CXN doesn’t look like of offers one up although it shouldn’t as of its prerequisite of getting AirPlay certification as apps need to change it. Likely a shortcoming of Roons AirPlay as it’s not official it’s reversed engineered to work on non apple hardware.

Yeah, could be.
I see a post from @Brian back in 2016 about Airplay support where he indicates that they aren’t sure how to figure out whether device volume is supported, or not. Not sure things have improved, as Airplay is probably not central to their plans.
How are you streaming to the Cambridge CXN device? Does the USB mode on the Cambridge also reproduce the issue? Is the Cambridge on the latest firmware?
Can you note the exact local time + date + track playing when you try to change the volume on the Cambridge and it does not respond?
