How can we help?

· I'm having trouble adding music to my library

Describe the issue

Hi, I'm considering a renewing my subscription after having difficulty using Roon a couple of years ago. I have 7000 songs on an old MacBook Pro that have been copied to an external hard drive (WD My Passport For Mac 2TB) from Apple Music. I now have a new MacBook Pro and don't want to erase all the data on the new machine to import the music files from the old one with the Import function. So my question is, if I sign up with Roon will I be able to import those files from the external hard drive directly into the Roon app? If the answer is yes, or there is some easy workaround you will have a loyal new customer. If it takes an IT specialist to make it happen that isn't going to work for me, computers are not my forte...

Describe your network setup

2011 Macbook Pro as the server in the past, 2020 MacBook Pro as the new server.

If you just want to import music files into a new installation of Roon, starting fresh with Roon:
On the new Macbook, attach the USB disk, then add it as a storage location in Roon > Settings > Storage.

If you want to migrate your old Roon database along with the music files to the new computer, then follow this guide:

Hey @nz.spindoc,

Thanks for taking the time to write in and share your report! @Suedkiez is 100% correct in their response above.

You can download Roon, start-up Roon Server, and create a fresh new database on the new Mac. Let me know if this helps and makes sense!

You should be able to access the external drive - I’d double check you’ve allowed the proper share settings for the drive, here’s more info just in case you don’t see it right away:

Hello,

As they say here in New Zealand, “Easy as!”

This is extremely helpful, thank you for taking the time for providing the advice. Even a Luddite like myself should be able to make this work, and I’ll sign up for the service this weekend. It will be nice to rejoin the Roon community with my fellow music lovers.
Cheers,
Patrick

Great we’re glad we were able to make this easy for you! Let us know if you have any further issues.
