Second plinth completed.
Stan approves!
Stan is a legend and I must say he challenges being the best reason for the picture.
Stan the man forever!!
Are they all done? I am happy to take them off your hands, as you probably will need the space for your next project. I wonât charge much for this serviceâŚ
Hehehe, nice try. My next project will be re-skinning my old standmounts (now living on my mancave desktop) in some sexy carbon fibre and carbon fibre/polyester weave.
Plain black carbon fibre on the baffle and rear and the rest wrapped in the carbon/polyester weave.
Should have lots of time on my hands soon as Iâve requested to drop to a 3 day week in my last year up to retirement.
@Graeme_Finlayson What drivers are those in the man-cave speakers? Iâm a stand mount junkie.
The midwoofers are the sliced paper cone Scanspeak Revelator 18W/8531G00. Tweeters are the Illuminator Air-Circ D3004/660000.
We need some pictures of the finished speakers in place and in use. Show us from a distance that shows the entire setup. Thanks.
EDIT: Eye candy.
EDIT2: Thanks Graeme. Beautiful setup. Iâll bet it sounds as good as it looks. You should build an airplane next.
What just to prove they actually exist and havenât been CGI all along
And perhaps pictures of the next project!!!
The refinishing of the standmounts isnât underway yet.
Now that I work a 3-day week, Mrs. Mad Scientist has been cracking the whip and has given me a spreadsheet detailing all the jobs to be done in and around the house!
I have managed to squeeze in some work in the Man Cave, though thatâs mainly been sorting out to enable other stuff to be done (and to dump the old desktop etc. as we had a 4 cu. yd skip for a couple of weeks).
Fabricated a couple of new desktops out of reclaimed scaffold boards, had to fab a set of legs for the fixed desk as well and replaced the drawer fronts on the desk unit too.
Meant a lot of rejigging stuff around too.
The new desk frame is an electric sit/stand unit, so all of my batteries and chargers needed a new home:
I moved the server cabinet 90 degrees around the corner and that meant recabling everything to reach the desk from the PC. l had to move the welder socket and put up some new power outlets for the relocated chargers.
Excellent photos, what will really set them off is if you come around to my house and repeat the sameâŚ

It doesnât look like you can stand up in that room.
The photos of the desk were taken with the top of it just over a metre from the floor. The ceiling is only 2 metres (6â 6") from the floor, though. Iâm only 5â 10", so plenty enough headroom for me!
As I"m a little over 6â2", it seems a bit crowded, LOL.
Further projects, semi-(un)related to hi-fi:
Built a proper table for my tungsten grinder:
Still got the bottom shelf to finish for my boxes of collets/bodies/cups.
For any one who doesnât know, these things are ridiculously noisy and produce a lot of vibration.
The frame is 38.1 mm (1½") box section with 34.8 mm (1â ") tubing for the legs. I welded up the rectangular box section pieces, then mag-drilled holes to accept the tube, only inserted to the thickness of the box section. Once it was all welded up, I drilled the top rectangle above each leg and filled the whole thing up with SS330 grade steel blasting shot (4600 kg/mÂł / 287 lb/cu ft), about 26 kg (57 lb) in all, then plugged the holes with Cu968 silicon-bronze TIG brazing rod. Quick grind to flush, a lick of matt black paint, then topped off with a piece of reclaimed oak worktop supported on rubber isolation mats. The grinder itself is also mounted on rubber. The mounts are screwed to the worktop and the grinder screwed into the mounts.
Now the whole workshop doesnât shake when Iâm sharpening tungstens.
This has got me thinking though - I wonder if anyone makes proper, heavy-duty, shot-filled, highly damped hi-fi/turntable racks?
Might be a good sideline for all the free time Iâll have starting next MayâŚ
I had a friend with a pipe making factory that I managed to score a good amount of used ss shot material and filled my speaker stands that needed it and this is great stuffâŚdoesnât rust as itâs ss, irregular shapes so it doesnât roll about and heavy too. Delivery of new shot could be challenging tho, while itâs easy in small amounts to handle a larger amount would be a good workoutâŚas is moving anything you fill with it that has any amount of a reasonable cavity.
Can I have your workshop when you are finished with it @Graeme_Finlayson, pretty please? Also, what is a tungsten grinder?
