Does anyone still use a Squeezebox? What are the benefits of using one with Roon?

the latest community firmware fixes the WiFi issue for both the Touch and Radio, although to be fair, it’s still advisable to use ethernet with Roon.

what is the benefit of using EDO w/ the optical output?

Here’s a nice summary: Darko - EDO

I don’t know if the EDO app is still available but if it is then it is worth installing.

I’m surprised; I thought optical topped out at 24/96, witch the touch supports natively.

Here I have two Squeezebox Radios.
An original in black and a ‘Special Edition’ in RED
They both have the optional battery feature, very handy for outdoor use.
Have had the original Squeezebox, a Duet and Transporter.
Been streaming for twenty years and Sean’s invention was ground breaking.
I now stream via a Linn Klimax DS, designed and manufactured about half a mile from here in Waterfoot outside the City of Glasgow here in Scotland.
With my Roon sub it has brought new life to my venerable Radios!.

i had a weird problem with my Touch. very occasionally it will turn on (not play music) in the middle of the night. this time when i turned it off, the screen went dark, no screen saver (clock, in my case). turned it on/off, but the clock wouldn’t come on.

rebooted roon, hard reboot of the device, nada…

so restarted LMS, checked for an update, found/installed, now all is well.

for the moment.

I think this is a common issue with the Touch. Mine is the same; the clock will display as it should for quite some time, but then will mysteriously disappear for awhile. Sometimes rebooting it and Roon will fix it, sometimes not. It’s been this way for years.

Fortunately, it doesn’t seem to affect the ability to play music.

Perhaps the best way to summarize how Squeezebox devices behave when used with Roon is:

Playback of music - rock solid.
Everything else - hit or miss depending on factors well beyond the control of mere humans.

I had all three Squeezebox units here.
An original Squeezebox, Duet and a Transporter.
Brilliant designs from Slim Devices.
I eventually graduated to Linn’s streamers.
An Akurate DS , and now Klimax DS fully upgraded which is a wee Beezer!.

Hello, I also have a squeezebox touch and it works very well and I was able to connect it to ROON installed on an intel NUC with ROCK.

I had to reset and update it. It works perfectly in Ethernet on my network and appears well in the settings of my Roon server. By the way, I recommend everyone to install Roon on a Mini PC, it’s really top-notch. My base configuration is a NUC ore i3 Broadwell NUC5i3RYH which I bought in 2015 (recommended by Roon) but which was intended for my 10-year-old son.

I added a 4TB SD, 32GB ram and hey presto! It’s a musical bomb! It’s ultra-fast and never crashes, and above all, it’s self-contained. It also works perfectly with Roon ARC
Today I’m going to buy a second-hand squeezbox radio to complete my Bose sound touch 10 mutli room.

I still use my two Squezebox Boom with Roon and SB Radio.

Interesting thread - I’ve got a classic that’s been sitting staring at me for years. I can’t see the point of resurrecting that but (somewhere!) there’s a Squeezebox radio so that’s worth looking for I think.
