Down-to-earth recommendations to newcomers

Insult to certain demographics? News to me. I keep hearing the phrase “getting old ain’t for sissies”, and agreeing with it more and more. If you mean homosexuals, I’m unfamiliar with that usage. Anyway IMO walking on eggs to avoid offending gays, transgendered people, people of color, etc. is getting a bit out of control. But this is not a place to have that debate.

For me personally, building computers, tweaking with their innards, scripting, occasionally programming, can be great fun. But when the time comes to put up my feet and listen to some music it’s the last thing I want to be dealing with.

Just come across Syd kitchen for the first time and his album Africa’s not for sissies and somehow remembered this thread.
The brain is a strange thing.

Being a big old sissie myself, I’m with Bette on this.

I had a tantrum to my gf today that i’ve waisted far too many hours over the last 2 years waiting for Roon or equipment connected to it. There are countless pitfalls that i’ve learned the hard way:

  • large libraries cause exponential headaches
  • don’t store backup folder within the scanned library folder (adds thousands of files and many many hours to the scan inventory)
  • don’t store the library on a NAS (unless you’re a network specialist with cash to burn), keep it USB
  • don’t buy Kef LSX as they drop out continuously (change tracks a few times, or skip ahead and you’ve got to disconnect and reconnect the ethernet cable)
  • direct connect usb is far easier and better SQ bang for buck/effort (for network to beat direct usb via a regen you need to spend many multiples of $ on your network - not even counting the opportunity cost of the time to maintain the network when things go inevitably wrong)
  • don’t try to have Roon at work and at home unless you want to lug a laptop and HDD EVERY day
  • don’t think the thousands of hours of metadata massaging will be yours to take with you if you decide to move away from Roon

Vent over =)

Well, it’s better out than in, as they say :grinning: - but I would query your last bullet.

You can take your metadata with you if you leave. Either in a spreadsheet (works for both streamed tracks/albums and local tracks/albums), or with basic metadata written out into a copy of your collection of local music files.

Down to earth advice… Read the Knowledge Base, then… Read it again.
Wire your network and be sure your core and control meet the specs in the knowledge base you have just read twice now.
Enjoy the music and get helpfully involved in the forum.

I agree with Chris: Read the Knowledge Base. It is pretty good. And if you have issues, search there first. I have been on ROON since summer 2018, and way more often than not I found all my answers in the Knowledge Base.

Enjoy the music.
