Nucleus working perfectly. Picked it up to dust it and moved it to the other side of the room on a different rack.
Switched it on, no light on the power button. Changed to a different power socket. Same issue.
Checked plug fuse, same issue.
Purchase two separate power supplies with the same spec as the Nucleus power supply. Still will not power up.
Nucleus returned to Henley Audio, in the UK. for diagnosis.
I paid £1,000 5 years ago, a little bit disappointed that it didn’t last longer.
I’m told it’s probably the Motherboard, in which case probably not worth repairing?
Yes, it is best to wait to hear the verdict from Henley in that case. Nucleus units can last a long time, but as with all technology, there can be spurious hardware failures. Personally, I still have a Rev A Nucleus from many years ago, working just fine and I do see other reports from users with Rev A units reaching out regarding issues unrelated to hardware.
Henley Audio Engineer has contacted me, stating that the Nucleus is actually working!
However, he confirmed that the light on the power button had failed. He told me that because my Nucleus is a ‘Rev B’ and is discontinued, they may not be able to source a new button.
Here comes the strange bit! The Engineer asked me, had I tried to power up the Nucleus with, or without the internal Samsung SSD connected. I told him, with the internal SSD still connected.
He indicated that if the internal SSD had failed the Nucleus would not power on?
So, I placed the Samsung SSD in to an enclosure and connected it to my M4 iMac, and sure enough the SSD has failed!
Is it not a bit strange that the power button light should fail at the same time as the SSD failed?
I can only confirm that the same thing happend to me as well a few years back. Replacing the M.2 SSD ended up fixing the issue. The Nucleus+ Rev. A has been happely running ever since.
Hi Bart
Did you have the light issue on the power button as well?
Just seems really weird that the button light should fail at the same time as the SSD.
However, the button light may have failed months ago and I wouldn’t have known about it.
It’s only the fact that I did some Spring cleaning that I had reason to move the Nucleus and power it off.
Glad to hear that the Henly folks were able to get the Nucleus to boot, this is a step in the right direction!
Just to confirm, this was the M2 SSD (housing the RoonOS), or another Internal Storage drive (for music)?
I wonder if there could have been some kind of power-related event that affected both the power button and the SSD? Otherwise, it is possible that he power light failed a longer time ago as you noted and it just wasn’t noticed.
The SSD was the 2.5 Samsung 870 EVO SSD that I put in and stored my music files.
Yes, there is a possibility that the button light failed sometime ago.
Thanks for the info! The good news is that replacing the drive is a straightforward process. If you’d like, I’m happy to walk you through the steps—or if you’re already familiar and have things underway, that’s great too. Just let me know how I can help!
My Nucleus is still on the work bench. The light on the power button has failed, and they are having trouble sourcing a new button, as the Rev B Nucleus model is discontinued.
So I’m waiting to hear back from them.
Thanks for letting us know! We should have a good amount of power buttons available, I’ll have our team reach out to Henley directly and see if we can’t help get you squared away!
