Error "Roon has lost control of the audio device" affecting multiple devices (ref#6EWMDL)

What best describes your playback issue?

· Music stops playing mid-track

Is there a specific error message you see? If so, please select from the following options:

· "Roon lost control of audio device"

Please try to reboot your Roon Server and check to see if this helps.

· Rebooting my Server had no effect, the issue remains

Please try to reboot and unplug/replug in your affected audio device and check to see if this helps.

· Rebooting and unplugging/replugging my audio device, the issue remains

Please open your Roon Remote and select the "System Output" Zone and try to play to it. Do you encounter any playback errors with this Zone?

· I don't have a System Output available, but I'd like to keep troubleshooting

Please try fully rebooting your network equipment

· No, I'm still having trouble

An issue with playback on System Output and another zone often indicates a network security problem. *Check your firewall(s)* to ensure that *Roon*, *RoonServer *and *RAATServer* are allowed to properly communicate

· I'm still having problems / This isn't relevant to me

Does the issue happen with local library music, streaming service music, or both?

· Both local and streaming content are affected

Please try playing content of a lower sample rate (44.1kHz or 48kHz). Do you still have the same issue?

· No, lower sample rates are still affected

What is the model/manufacturer of the affected audio device(s) and the connection type?

· Please see earlier response.

Describe the issue

Of late, I seem to be getting this error "Roon has lost control of the audio device". This happens to both local content as well as streamed content (Tidal). The system has become unusable unless I connect directly from Tidal. Rebooted my network, the Roon Core (running on a dedicated Mac mini), my Synology NAS as well as the devices impacted (Lumin D2, Cambridge CXNv2 and my Sonos system). Nothing has helped. Software has been updated on all devices. Please help.

Describe your network setup

Lumin and Cambridge are wired. Mac mini (Roon Core) also wired. Sonos is wireless.

Hey @Prem_Raj_Natarajan,

Thanks for writing in, and welcome to the community!

This is helpful information - are they all wired directly to your primary router? If possible, could you temporarily hardwire your mac running Roon Server directly to your router, and reproduce the issue?

Take note of the date, time, and name of track attempted to play. From there we’ll be able to take a closer look. :+1:

Please state the brand and model of your router, WiFi access points, mesh, network switches, powerline network adapters, and describe how everything are connected together.

Power cycle the whole network of devices start from router, including all network infrastructure, Mac, Roon endpoints and all mobile devices.

Hello,

Router is Asus RT88 and mesh via Asus RT 53U. No powerline connections. Switches are TP-Link 24 port.

Reboot has already been done prior to opening the ticket.

The problem is not Lumin specific. It is also affecting my Cambridge CXNv2 and Sonos.

Was working fine with the same setup until a few weeks ago.

Then there is a significant chance of hardware issue with the network infrastructure or Mac Mini. Disable any firewall / VPN / internet security on the Mac.

Connect both Mac Mini Roon Server and Lumin to the same network device - either the RT88 (AC or AX?), RT53 (AC or AX?) or the TP-Link switch. If one device doesn’t solve this problem, try another.

So, without changing a single thing, the issue seems to have magically resolved itself. I am not confident it will stay that way but I do not agree that there is an issue with my network or my Mac Mini unless your logs say otherwise. To put it simply - everything else worked on the network as is except for Roon. Roon really cannot be that sensitive that it requires a very specific setup.

Anyway, I will monitor it for now and see if the problem resurfaces.

Thank you.
