Evaluation of a Roon launch with millions of music titles

I use exactly the same method when selecting wine/whisky/beer AND albums, the marketing Gods have totally got me. Actually, this is a good idea for a new thread: “don’t judge the content by its cover”.

I use this method for the recognition of already played albums. But it’s true, if you listen to a lot of genres, you can already guess what to expect from typical presentations.

The daily performance in identifying is still above the 70000 mark, processed in about 14 hours. Today it was exactly 77685 and started a little later today at 7:34 am. Now I have 87611 albums that are considered identified. With 323548 albums the bar is so high that foreseeably only about 50% of all cases will succeed

TP is the same from Di. 7 and TO from 37507 to 45558

there is an even more accurate method. Between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, people drink Flensburger Pilsener because it plops so nicely.

If that’s the sound of your day, you’ll always be satisfied and won’t need a large library.

But I’m still thinking very carefully about whether I can really bear the plop as a continuous loop without AI more than 6 times a day. I have to take into account my age and my health condition with and maybe I still find that at Qobuz in HiRes quality.

If not, I’ll just go to the drink store, look at the beautiful cover and take two boxes with me.

Lol, Flensburger Pils is not my thing… Weißbier is a different story  Anyway, back to the music :+1:

Toby Walsh is Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the University of New South Wales in Sydney and has been awarded the Humboldt Research Award for his achievements. His new book “Machines Behaving Badly” has just been published.

Here in the FAZ article, he looks at AI more from the point of view of self-driving cars, but everything he says about it can be applied metaphorically to figurative or acoustic self-driving by a computer. Instead of hurtling down the roadway at 150 mph, 150 matching songbird beats per second will come when the computer has learned only what we like. This artificial supernatural intelligence will then also create culture and trigger completely different forms of entertainment and fascination in further generations. One can find this terrible or beautiful. Maybe in an artificial world the perception of humans is no longer important.

The professor writes:

Human perception, for example, is incredibly robust. You can rotate an image without changing the way we see the world. If you wear glasses that turn the world completely upside down, the brain quickly compensates and restores the world to its correct appearance. You can rotate an image a few degrees and confuse any computer vision AI system. You can even change a single pixel and trick the algorithms. The computer then no longer recognizes the image as a bus, but possibly as a banana.

Fruit flies like a banana. Time flies like an arrow.

One of the better days here, unfortunately not for everyone in the community.

Then I wanted to know it again, the day ended and I wanted to get to 100000. Twice not quite worked out. Tomorrow it goes on.

It’s the weekend and new records are not expected. What was possible today shows the two pictures. TP is almost without activity.

14 hours Identification on weekend

Screenshot_20220611_210835

I was still thinking this morning, should I start Roon or let it rest for the weekend.

Maybe Roon has taken the decision away from me.

I let everything run and show again where the journey stops or continues. This helps to identify the problem, plan further actions and finally find a solution. It seems the weekends are not as perfect as the working days. Maybe the software has an AI that notices, many people have weekends or days off and don’t have to work. Equality for all robots?

Screenshot_20220612_112720

No day without progress, some smaller, other days with bigger steps.

Screenshot_20220612_224420

The new week initially starts again without progress. Manjaro has received an update. I was able to open Roon, create this information with a screenshot, log out of Roon again and then wanted to crop it.

Strangely, only the mouse moved and Manjaro was frozen. A restart fixed it and I can share this.

The server now has a lot more to do:

  1. more music tracks have been moved from the music folder to the external hard drives.

  1. the logon to the subscription services has been done again

Screenshot_20220614_072504

  1. music is actively played and no more fallback solution is used.

  1. on-demand audio analysis is set to Fast.

Screenshot_20220614_090232

My computer has the system monitor, spreadsheet (LibreOffice) and Chrome browser running in addition to Roon via PlayOnLinux. I can switch between applications and windows without errors after the update. Nothing freezes anymore. Yesterday, after a Manjaro update with new Nvidia drivers, I had twice frozen desktops, so that only the restart helped. It should be clear to everyone that the (problem) variables become larger if you don’t use an off-the-shelf system, but go your own way with particularly large libraries. With other programs I would have aborted this attempt long ago. Despite all the joy, there are still a few small drawbacks. The Roon radio no longer plays completely without gaps with this database size and thinks a few seconds about how to continue. However, there are a lot of processes running in Roon itself and also outside. I think the developers are on the right track to improve the unique even more.

The network activity and the processor activity correlate well visibly in one place here. No memory leak visible, everything on a horizontal line in the middle (since the beginning of the session).

After about seven hours, I had a game pause that could only be fixed manually.

In any case, for some unexplained reason, he lost the DAC. Surely easier to repair than to run to the record player.

Change of operating system and test with Windows 10 on the same machine:

Even with almost 300000 music tracks, Roon is lightning fast. No problems discovered with this partial database.

I return to Linux Manjaro with paused metadata optimizer and read the remaining files faster.

The interim result with Metadata Optimizer there looks like this after many hours:

Scanning and adding is done quickly under Manjaro when the metadata optimizer is paused.

Dumb isn’t it…if those were Vinyl albums or CD’s there would not be room to store them…what a waste is seems to me. You can’t possibly know the music so maybe that’s the point…

I had a wall unit specially made for my LPs in the 80s and built/assembled shelves myself. But that was not a solution for this collecting passion, even if the cds were much smaller.

I have given that up (given away). Many joyful faces and less balast with me.

In the mid-90s was recognizable where the new journey leads and late 90s music available as MP3. The first services came into fashion and already in 2005 it was visible that streaming would get the market.

Now it is visible that the highest quality also runs over the Internet line. Also this collection gets in the next years / decades the delete button. But before that, with double backup, it will be built up again elsewhere.

What remains is the music and the consideration of how to get well into the future with it.

No I will never again only collect and listen to whole albums, but I want to make many musical excursions with AI and good starting points.

After my death, all this is superfluous, all just for my good hours!

I’ll be honest, I couldn’t see myself going to the lengths that Uwe has gone to get this working, but I wouldn’t presume to call it dumb.

It’s not meant to be evil, it’s just another perspective on the things we do in life. Everyone does it differently and right for themselves. It may still turn out that I have to modify the idea, I have done with LP, CD, cassette no different. Perhaps I have already in a few years only many streaming costs with different providers to mutually secure the stock. Unfortunately, there will probably never be everything there that I have digitized from LP ode cassette. But what makes the difference? The missing own million music titles or the not yet heard 300 million songs of the various services? My life is certainly rather too short for the second, the other I can classify well and there lies the problem. Can you really part with it? Don’t you ever want to hear it again?

Don’t get me wrong, I like the idea, and I’ll be really interested to see how it turns out, I’m just not convinced about the scale, especially as you’re having to push the software so close to its limits. But, as I said, I’ll be interested to see how it turns out
