Feedback Thread - Roon 2.0.30 Playlist Management

Appeciate the work of Roon on playlist management. I use playlists a lot, but not inside Roon, because of a lack of functionality. I always go to MediaMonkey of JRiver to manage them. The 2 most important reasons for this are:
1- To be able to add the same playlist to many different folders
2- To be able to nest folders inside folders eg
------Beethoven
---------Symphonies
---------Concertos
---------Quartets
etc…
Those featuress open up fantastic possibilities. They have been available for years in MediaMonkey and JRiver.

Is the Roon team planning to offer them in a futiure implementation ?

Best,

It has been addressed several times already and for me this is the biggest problem of the new interface: all my playlists are visible in my husbands profile and vice versa. A situation I do not want, if we had the same taste in music or the same thoughts about how to arrange our collections, we would not need separate profiles. But we don’t have the same taste nor the same logic, so we need the possibility to keep the content of the profiles separated.

The previous way worked well enough: a toggle switch to show your own and when really needed the other’s profile or/and shared playlists. This new way doesn’t work for me and I am pondering on how to move all my playlists out of Roon all together, which sadly also would make Roon less useful for me.

Please reinstate the toggle switch!

PS I also do not understand why the new folder icons are so big and take up so much screen real estate, more than 10% of the available height!

Great improvement, but we need playlist profile separation, because in my family we like different music genres and all profiles list visibility creates full mess. This can be some separate setting or filter.

This is a no brainer, I don’t use playlists but who would anyone want to see someone else’s playlists.

Well i agree with some Nathaniel observations (especially the folder icons) but I like to Qobuz / Tidal icons to be there for immediate recognition. I care not about advertising/not-advertising I prefer the services Icons as they make it easier to identify the right qobuz/tidal spot

As per my prev post I don’t like

  • possibility to add new playlist directly from sidebard, sidebar should be for navigating not for initiating actions
  • risk to have too many playlist in the Sidebar: I’d love to be able to reduce playlists in sidebar… maybe option to show only the LIKED playlist? (then one should be able to LIKE playlists…)

Playlists are my primary, and much-loved, way of using Roon, so I’m happy to see them getting attention and powerful new features. Thank you!

However, I share a big new sense of frustration with the posters above, including @Stefan_Mauron @Romtje and @kd007 , about how the new setup breaks what was working for us in terms of separating the playlists of different users in a family situation.

I spent a lot of time setting up separate user profiles for each family member, and then naming and organizing each person’s playlists within those profiles in a custom fashion, exactly so that we could all keep our playlists separate, and so that the playlist order for that user only would represent the preferences of that user.

Now everyone’s playlists are mixed together, which for us defeats the primary purpose of the profiles. Sure, we can turn off playlists in the sidebar, but then there’s now an extra step required for each of us to access our specific playlists. Not only do we have to first change the user as before, which required several taps, but now another extra step is required after going to playlists of then selecting and opening our particular user folder. Before, that selection was already taken care of when we selected the user.

Ideally, we would need toggle options in Settings for having the new list of playlists in the sidebar show only the selected user’s playlists (which would be great), and/or for having the playlists pane show only the selected users playlists directly, without the new folder level, as before.

(Yes, we could just leave it on one user and only use the folder approach; that would actually be fewer steps than before via the approach of switching users. But then we don’t get the other advantages of separate users, for example accurate listening history for each user, etc.)

Thanks for your ongoing efforts to improve Roon and for listening to feedback!

P.S. I would also love the ability to reorder items or at least sections in the sidebar. Since I rely so much on Playlists, for example, I might choose to put them above My Library items Albums, Artists, and Tracks, which I use less.

apologies if this is covered up-thread, when I copy a local playlist to Qobuz, I get a message about tracks that couldn’t be sync’d. That’s fine, but when I click on the pop-up I expect to be given a list of the tracks that weren’t sync’d, and all that happens is that the pop-up goes away, which is completely unhelpful. How do I access info on the tracks that didn’t sync?

once a local playlist is copied to Qobuz, is there a way for the Qobuz version to be automatically mirrored to future updates on the local version? E.g. I currently have two versions of a playlist “Demo”, one local and the other is “Demo Q”. Going forward, how do I most efficiently manage these two versions? It looks now that I have to manage two Demo playlists instead of one? E.g. I add a track to the local version of Demo, but I separately have to add it to Demo Q because it’s not auto-mirrored to the local version? That feels rather clunky?

Just an idea, forget about the local one and work only with the streaming one (on which you can and/delete/order/whatever now within roon)…

sure, that’s a workaround if I’m ok to accept the limitation of no local content in playlists that is unavailable on Qobuz, I’d hoped for something more sophisticated but no doubt there’ll be improvements.

Qobuz tracks that i add to a qobuz playlist don’t show “Playlists” label…

I my wishlist for the next round of potential updates would b e

  1. Display the folders created on the sidebar
  2. Allow the creation of Nested Folders
  3. Allow for a limited number of Pinned/Favorited Playlists that always display at the top of the Playlist section.
  4. Give Tags the playlist sidebar treatment
  5. Move Bookmarks to the sidebar and also give them the playlist treatment.

And then you don’t get to use Folders, you have to pick two way edit OR Folders

Are you talking about in Album view, seeing a little link to the playlist? If so, that’s only if the Album is in your Roon library and you added the “library version“ of the track. (If you meant something else I didn’t get it)

That’s what i’m talking about, but it works only if the playlist is a copy in roon, not the original one (on qobuz).

Perfect wishlist! Then playlists, tags and bookmarks will give the full potential they have.

Ain’t it funny youv’e got a playlist that consists of tracks from Qobuz, but when you make a copy to a Qobuz playlist some of the tracks can’t be found??

for discussion, but I’d rather not clutter the sidebar with everything that can be done inside each topic.

Otherwise this way one could ask to add to the sidebar the Qobuz weekly release playlist under Qobuz or the Recently Played, Recently Added lists on Roon item, …

I’d prefer a simple/lean/one-pager sidebar and when you chose an item you get all details inside

Just my 2 cents

As this sidebar functionality can be turned off already right now, I think everyone can live with that. In my opinion, essential would be nested folders and same treatment for tags and bookmarks.

Yes, I never thought I would see the day a “Folder” icon would appear in the Roon GUI. It now looks like Roon has veered off down a different path. I really don’t like it but “whatever!”.

I do like the new playlist functionality but looks wise it now feels like Roon has started to look generic. Not sure I see the need for icons next to words in the sidebar.
