Describe the issue
I have a focusrite scarlette 18i20 that I've used for a long time, and when I recently logged in to listen to music on my PC it no longer shows up. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, I tried using roonbridge, but nothing seems to make it work.
Describe your network setup
I have an asus RT-AX88U running the latest firmware. My roonserver is on linux, and is connected to ethernet. My windows PC is connected via wifi 6. The PC is able to connect to roonserver because I can stream music to other audio devices and manage it from the frontend of roon.
Thank you for your post. The Focusrite 18i20 will be managed by the drivers on the Windows machine - for this device, these should be the ASIO drivers automatically downloaded when you register via their website.
A few things to check here:
RAATServer.exe will be the Roon executable engaging with the ASIO driver for this audio interface. If you already have the ASIO drivers or another driver properly installed, then I’d verify that Windows Defender firewall isn’t locking out RAATServer.exe, ROONServer.exe, RoonAppliance.exe, or RoonGoer.exe. This is common after Windows system updates if they are automated.
Try refreshing RAATServer entirely. You’ll want to create a Backup to preserve any custom Zone settings like MUSE presets or filters you’ve created.
Rename the “RAATServer” folder to “RAATServer_old”
Restart the Roon App to generate a new RAATServer folder
Are you using any third-party mixer software, like the Focusrite software or a DAW? If so, try opening Roon without this software open, but with the Focusrite device visible in your System audio settings. Does this change any of the behavior?
Please let us know if this helps - I’m marking this as the Solution for now, but the thread will remain open and we’ll continue troubleshooting and escalate if you’re still stuck. Thanks!
Hello, thanks for the troubleshooting tips. I verified the executables have access to the network via the settings in windows defender. I uninstalled roon, and deleted the RAATServer folder, then reinstalled roon, and started everything up. I know the my focusrite is working because I’m able to fire up my DAW and it works fine, I also tried setting my system audio to the focusrite, and not having it set to the focusrite to see if it was an exclusivity thing. The alsa driver appears in working order. Do you have any additional steps I can take to try to troubleshoot the issue?
@Devon_Gleeson, can confirm you have firewall exceptions for roon.exe on your PC, as well as that the PC is set to Private mode under Windows networking?
@Devon_Gleeson, everything looks sorted. Does the 18i20 work with Windows’ native WASAPI driver? I have a 2i2 3rd Gen and use just WASAPI for my Roon connection. It also may be worth refreshing your RAATServer instance per Connor’s suggestion.
Hi @Robert_F, the main issue right now is that I don’t see the windows machine listed at all in roon, which means I’m not able to select any devices to play music on. For example, with my Mac, I’m able to choose different devices, but that’s because it shows up in the UI, where the windows machine does not. I’ve tried a complete wipe of the RAATServer and configs, and have seen no change.
Both machines are on the same network, and are in the same subnet. They are able to route to each other because I’m able to connect the Roon app on my windows machine to the Roon server on my Linux machine. I’m able to open an RDP session from the Linux machine to the windows machine. Does roon store anything in the windows registry that I could clear out? This whole thing is strange because it used to work a couple months ago.
I should say, I think the weird part is that there is no “This PC” section, like how there used to be, similar to how I see a “This Mac” section when I’m looking at the settings on my mac machine.
I see that you’ve set your windows to a private network which is great! Can you also give your router and windows a hard reboot and let me know if anything changes?
Another thing to check on the windows - is Sonic Suite 3 listed within the device? If so, please test out disabling this at startup.
I just verified that sonic studio 3 was already disabled. It looks like I disabled it on the motherboard. I’ve rebooted both my router and windows machine. I’m not seeing anything in the audio section of the roon client on my windows machine still. Could there be something stuck in the registry that needs to be cleaned up? What’s making me ask about the registry is that when I look at startup apps I see the following:
I also verified I have the most up to date drivers for my focusrite, but I don’t believe this is a driver issue, because roon at least on my mac it lists all audio devices, and on the windows machine is just not listed at all. RE: my original screenshot at the top of the thread.
Ok, well I don’t know what changed other than I tried reinstalling the roon bridge again, but now it’s working. So I think we can call this ticket closed. Thanks for your help everyone.
