Follow up to recently closed topic - Roon loses network connection

Fwiw Andrew at Small Green Computer says the Sonic Transporter has been working great with the Linux kernel upgrade. Says I need to contact Roon support for the problem…alas…is there any way to reach them besides the forum? Hmm my subscription expires in two weeks. Three months not working, two weeks no response from support re logs? As much as I love Roon I can not justify under these conditions…

Hello @Lawrence_Klein, my apologies for the delay on this issue. I have escalated this thread to our QA team which they have now opened an investigation into this issue. As soon as I have their feedback I’ll provide you with an update.

Thank you so much!

Hey @Lawrence_Klein, no problem! I’ll make sure to keep you in the loop.

Thank you and please let me know if anything I can do to help drill down on the problem. I appreciate it!

As an update, I have upgraded my SonicTransporter and Microjukebox to the very latest thanks to Andrew’s help at Small green Computer, and I have updated to latest Roon build. Unfortunately, the drops are now within in 1-2 songs, so actually the problem I have is getting worse with the updates. Maybe 1.8 will fix it. Support is indeed looking into my situation, so we will see if it’s just me or part of a global issue. I’m still not sure that NetworkManager is addressed in the updates.

After many restarts and all the updates - seems the rapid disconnects may have been related to yet another scan of the main music source drive - but finally I seem to be back to only dropping connections every two-three hours. And as before, I have working Sonos for long Christmas playlists off the same music server that Roon drops, so it does not seem to be hardware…

Any follow up yet? Thank you

Can you tell me how the network storage location is connected to your network?

Thank you so much for the follow up. All the music library servers and the Sonic Transport which only houses Roon are all Ethernet cabled to the ASUS router. The problem only began when the endless scanning issue started now about 4 months ago. The router also connects the same drives to Sonos which remains stable. I considered whether the router may have problems but no problems detected with testing or other network functions.

The weakest link is my ISP since I am in the country I only have LTE cell ISP, but it’s also been fairly stable…

Thank you

I could put the music files on a usb drive and attach directly to the deficated Roon Server SonicTransporter. Would that be significantly better than hard wired NAS?

So I disconnected all the NAS drives and plugged in a usb drive. Playlist ran about 5 hours than dropped. So problem not helped with that approach. Will keep trying a few more playlists to see if any improvements

So here’s a sudden drop running off a USBdrive only 12/31/20 9:44 on Dusty Springfield Just A Little Loving. It’s been better not using the NAS but it’s still not right…

And another drop at 9:52 on same album on Son of A Preacher Man. Back to unable to play one song without a drop it seems…

Hello @Lawrence_Klein, could you do this one more time and reply here with a timestamp when you notice the dropout? This would be a great data point to get over to the QA team since you’re running a pretty specific setup there.

Things have been better after I reloaded the USB drive and let Roon start all over again. Had to recreate playlists but went much better with start over approach so far. I am getting an external SSB drive to try, and will see if the problems return at that point. It probably make sense that over 100,000 items on NAS is overwhelming the system, though everything worked perfectly 4 months ago…

Thanks, will keep you updated…

Ok, after adding a SSD drive and turning off all NAS connections, and updating my ASUS RT-AC88U to latest firmware, I still get drops. Much better than before, but still only Roon affected by whatever goes on. Most recent, dropped in middle of first song in playlist on 01/08/2021 at about 6:59 on Beach Boys Put Your Head On my Shoulder. Only thing left to do may be to replace router but it’s working fine with everything else still, including Sonos working off three NAS databases on same network…

Just a thought @Lawrence_Klein, are you using a static IP address on the Sonic Transporter? If not it would be worth trying.

Yes I’ve been using assigned addresses all along, but thanks for the suggestion!

Hello @Lawrence_Klein
I also use this exact router ASUS RT-AC88U for DSLwith Roon - without any problems!
Just another idea:

LTE cell ISP, so do you have an LTE modem?
… LTE is a shared medium, so performance drops and disconnections may occur.
I have a Telekom LTE router as well, besides the Asus, and recently wrote about my experience with Roon via LTE:

Thanks for this info. I am not streaming, all the dropped files are now on USB SSD with no NAS and no streaming. While things are better, I never used to get any drops with the same setup until about 4 months ago with an “upgrade”. This started the same time as the endless scanning issue, but that was fully resolved with a subsequent Linux kernel update. So while it could still be related to poor internet service, the isp demands should be minimal and again I’m able to stream radio and high res files from Amazon HD on Sonos (understand not played as high res) with no drops…
