I’m rationalising a couple of my Raspberry Pi Roon endpoints - so have two to sell.
Endpoint 1
Endpoint 1 is a Raspberry Pi4 with Hi Fi Berry’s best DAC HAT - the DAC2 HD. It is in a black metal Hi Fi Berry case. It’s very minimal with the Pi Ethernet and USB ports on one side - and the HAT audio RCA connectors on another.
It comes with a genuine Raspberry Pi 4 power supply.
I have been using this for a few years without problems (although see software notes below).
I’m looking for £75 + shipping for this endpoint
Endpoint 2
Endpoint 2 is a Raspberry Pi3b with the same high quality DAC HAT (DAC2 HD), but this also has the Hi Fi Berry AAMP60 class D amplifier board sitting on top of the DAC HAT, so this able to drive speakers directly!
This is probably the smallest all in one way of driving speakers from Roon.
It still retains the HAT audio RCA connectors - so you could just use the HAT DAC if you didn’t want to use the amplifier.
Hi Fi Berry didn’t make a case to for this combination of boards - so I have re-purposed an Allo case, leaving the sides open. This case allows you to reach the speaker screw connectors from above.
It comes with the Meanwell 18V 60W switched mode power supply that Hi Fi Berry recommended (and sold) - this supplies the entire unit (amplifier, DAC, Raspberry Pi). I expect it will provide around 25W per channel to the speakers.
I used this for several years to drive my bathroom ceiling speakers (also using roon convolution room correction!) without issue - again see software notes below).
I’m looking for £100 + shipping for this endpoint.
Software Notes:
These endpoints can run a number of software stacks, including Ropieee and Hi Fi Berry OS. I found two limitations a future buyer should be aware of.
- The DAC2 HD board makes a click when changing between 44k and 48k derived sample rates. Like some others who use this HAT I found this annoying (particularly on Endpoint 2 via the AAMP60- where it was quite loud). The simple fix is to set roon to always upsample to the HAT’s maximum 192K - so then the click doesn’t happen between tracks.
- When using Ropieee there is a problem with the Hi Fi Berry driver - which can automatically set the volume to zero. There is a way round this - but I figure this is for the more advanced user. I don’t believe there is any issue in Hi Fi Berry OS If you want to use Ropiee the info you need is here: Ropiee 2024.08/ Pi 4/ HiFiBerry DAC2 HD - Volume in Roon keeps resetting to 0?
Because of issue 2 I have installed (and tested) the latest Hi Fi Berry OS. This works with roon (and shows the endpoints as Roon Ready) and I think avoids the volume issue.
If you buy both I will pay the shipping!
