My Gen 6 NUC i3 with Roon Rock has become painfully slow. We’re talking 20‑second load times, sometimes even worse. And the wild part is: it didn’t gradually decline. It wasn’t a slow slide into old age. It just fell off a cliff in the last month. Before that, it wasn’t fast, but it loaded things in a few seconds—totally fine. Now? Roon takes so long to load an album it feels like it’s mocking me. It’s gone from “a bit slow” to utter garbage.
Yes, I know it’s an older-gen i3. I’m not expecting miracles. But don’t tell me a machine goes from “fine” to “barely usable” overnight and that this is just normal aging. Something changed.
I did add another switch because I have a second streamer, but I’ve done that before without issues. I even reset the whole network—pulled the router, refreshed all the IPs—no improvement.
Buying a newer NUC isn’t the real issue here. What bothers me is the sudden drop. Hardware doesn’t usually go from “okay” to “catastrophic” in a month unless something is actually wrong.
So I’m really looking for advice:
What could cause such a dramatic slowdown out of nowhere? Is this likely a network issue, a failing component, or something in Roon itself? I’d love to hear what others think before I start replacing hardware for no good reason.
I resetted the network by unpluging my router. So IP addresses would refresh..
But buying a better nuc isnt the real problem… but the change went to fast, so in my eyes hard ware should be still fine.
I can stop nuc from webbroswer, but the restart option doesnt work. Also am not able to enter my rock server anymore… what is going on. Is windows 11 so trash. Dont even know how to enter my rock now.
Anyways. Hitting the stop button and then starting seems to help. Roon loads way faster again.
It could be thermal throttling. The ventilation fins sometimes get blocked by dust. The easiest way is to open the case (usually 4 screws in the bottom) and blow air through the ventilation fins. Be ready for a dust cloud!
Just to add my voice to this one - I’m running ROCK on a NUC7I7BNH with local library and Tidal (107k tracks) Noticed a real slowdown over the last couple of months. I run a lot of zones (10 or so in various groupings) no idea if this has a bearing? I dismantled and cleaned out dust which hasn’t made a difference. I’m planning to upgrade later in the year to the latest supported NUC (mine’s circa 2017 and has been fantastic) but can’t help feeling something’s changed in Roon’s code/back end to impact so many of us?
I dont trust windows 11. I mean, i cant even find my rock in my network anymore. Reinstalling is bog hassle. If still cant find de rock then i cant add some stuff dont remember anymore and ill be in a bigger mess
Sorry, i dont know why my nuc is almost normal again. Just stopped it then restarted it. O yes also unplugged my modem and turned them both on at the same time.
