Grimm MU1 / MU2 Disc Ripping

Hi! I have a Grimm MU2 8TB, and I love the sound of the device. I do however miss the simplicity of ripping CDs to my Roon (NUC) Rock. Being able to insert a disc into the drive and check the progress through the UI. This is not possible with Grimm, I believe.

I still have the NUC and it’s not currently in use. I’m imagining that I could re-establish the NUC as my core, and when ripping just route it to save the rips to the internal storage on the MU2, therefore making the MU2 simply an endpoint.

Am I missing a critical point here that makes this idea impractical/impossible?

You seem to miss the fact that Roon OS does not allow you to use a network share for ripping (as documented). You can of course move files across manually after ripping. Two points to that though:

  • it is considered “bad practice” (by the community) to have the files stored on a music endpoint (endpoint → Roon Server → endpoint)
  • it is considered “bad practice” (by the community) to use Roon OS CD Ripper at all (files missing metadata and proper names, often issues with detecting multi-CD albums/boxsets)

Okay, so during the time period I had a ripper that was connected directly to my NUC running Roon Rock and the UI detected the ripper and updated me on the tracks as they were saving to the drive, this was counter to the intent of Roon?

This is a community forum and the Roon Software Discussion is not monitored by Roon Labs, so for that (and other reasons possibly) you might never get an official reply from Roon Labs, explaining their intent and reasoning behind an existing feature. Feel free to use the Roon OS CD Ripper if you wish, just be aware of its (potential) downsides. Using it is for sure better than not having the ability to rip CDs at all – but you could connect the “external ripper” to a PC/Mac instead and do the ripping, file/folder naming and adding metadata properly there, so a weak argument it seems.

I guess the problem is that I have two machines that run Roon, but I don’t really use a computer per se. I’m familiar with how to move files, but I don’t want to borrow my wife’s laptop to get into it. The less time I can have in front of a screen, the better.

I really do want to use the 8TB of space, and I’d love to have the seamless ripping of files by just interesting a CD as I had with my Rock. I did always go back through and search for the metadata via Roon on an iPad though.

Thanks for your replies

You can take a look at:

A community extension that allows for network shares as storage for ripping. The required Linux machine could potentially be something simple as a RaspBerry Pi using DietPi as OS you connect the external ripper to.

PS. I don’t think this improves the situation in any other means than allowing you to use the storage in your current Roon Server for ripping.
