I went to Paris to celebrate my 75 th birthday.

I was looking for an excuse to buy the Bathys Mg since knowing the speed new stuff gets to South Africa I might jump the queue a little.

The headphones were actually very good but I didn’t get a chance to compare them to the Focal Clear Mg for the reasons below.

To be honest I was less than impressed with the showroom, it had more Naim Uniti Atom HE than I could count, one per demo headphone.

I know the Parisians are proud of their language , mine is real schoolboy stuff but with the accent on the pairing with a British company, Naim, I would have expected a more multi lingual approach in such a cosmopolitan city as Paris. There was one assistant to cope with the whole showroom (4 customers at one point) and he spoke no English. His English was as bad as my French.

I was literally sat in a chair , given the headphones and a USB C cable and left, I was not offered any source material I was expected to supply my own from my phone (luckily all 44.1 FLAC). The salesman made no effort to sell me a 1200 Euro set of headphones.

I admit it’s my shortfall in not being fluent in French BUT , the majority of waiters etc had better English.

Typical Englishman abroad, If they “don’t understand say it again louder” but I’ll now have to wait …

Overall a very poor impression of the salesmanship of some very high end headphones and speakers

That’s a very disappointing experience Mike, especially given how much you were looking forward to it.
I was in Reims and Paris last week, and my trick is to talk them using in my very few and bad French, it clearly hurts them because normally they start talking English too me.
Thankfully my son who I was collecting from University is fairly fluent in French and saved many an ear from having to listen to me :face_with_open_eyes_and_hand_over_mouth:

Happy Birthday! I hope the rest of your Paris trip was wonderful.

I’m a bit confused, did you buy the Bathys MGs? And if so, how do like them?

No I didn’t buy them because of he experience we cut the demo short ,I was getting nowhere

What I wanted was to compare the Bathys Mg on the wired USB C DAC mode with the Clear Mg on the Naim headphone amp, which I already have.

I was also a bit worried about guarantees on Grey imports , I probably will buy them we they arrive here in DAC mode they were quite impressive

@Mike_O_Neil
I personally don’t understand why a lot of people think that their language is that important that wherever they go people should be able to speak their language?
A lot of English-speaking people think everyone else should speak their language.
A lot of French-speaking people think everyone else should speak their language.
A lot of German-speaking people think everyone else should speak their language.

Why?
To be clear, when you are in a foreign country, when you try to speak the language of the inhabitants, they will see that as courtesy towards their language, and they will try to help you as good as they can. That is what I already noticed wherever I went. To be clear, my native language is not English, neither French and also not German, but I try to speak all those languages when necessary (some better than other of course).
On the other hand is a pity that you were not able to buy the Bathys Mg, due to language-barriers.
I hope you don’t feel offended, as that is not the purpose of this message. I just wanted to express my feelings.
By the way, Happy Birthday.
Kind regards, Frank.

I went to our local Chinese takeaway a few years ago. I had decided to learn how to order our found in Mandarin. My Mandarin is worse than my native tongue :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

The guy taking my order looked at me, at first I thought he was impressed with me. Then he spoke, and with a broad local accent to Stoke On Trent said “Bloody hell duck, I don’t speak Chinese”.

The moral of this story is that these days it’s impossible to know what someone’s native language is. So many different folk from different countries work all over the world. Rightly or wrongly, you decide, English does seem to be the common language, Spanish and French following closely behind.

You would have thought at a trade show, which attracts many different folks from many different countries, that the assistant might have spoken English. Like @Mike_O_Neill did, I would have tried speaking French, but quiet possibly have been in the same situation.

As you may know I the original (aka non-MG) Focal Bathys and the USB-C mode is just fantastic - a simple on-the-go solution for premium sound quality. I would imagine that the Bathys MG come pretty close to the sound quality of the Clear MG. Although one should keep in mind that the Bathys are closed back and the Clear are open backed.

fwiw, my father’s name (not Naim) was Jean-René with an exceedingly French last name.

but he was Danish, and spoke no French. He did speak German rather well. his father’s name was Jean Johannes, also a Dane, and he never forgave his parents for giving him the same name twice.

Very nice. How many different headphone amps do you have? Any electrostatic headphones?
Love the CanJam poster!

I own several different headphones Sennhesier, Grados Sonys ,and have had great results with Roon on all of them. I find the different EQ settings to be right on the money for the most part. I recently purchased the Audeze LCDX and I have to say they are definitely my favorite headphones. They weren’t cheap but well worth the money. I’m hearing thing’s in my music that I never heard even with albums I have heard several times. Amazing headphones.
