I’m a bit of an oddball with box sets, in that I value them as collections of the original albums and see little value in the box itself. I use Tags to put the discs back into their virtual box (to kind of record where the albums came from). I can see folder browsing* as a useful alternative for me here.
Great work! Much appreciated. One suggestion: would it be possible to have a link to “Find in folder” from the Now Playing tab? “Go to folder” is a good start, but if the folder has a large number of tracks it can still be hard to locate the one specific file that’s playing.
Am I missing something? Couldn’t you (we: I’m keeping an open mind - but may only start to use FB in due course because Roon already works extremely well for me without it) just ignore it?
I looked at the folder browser, not for me, but It’s not an issue having the option listed in the menu. Like you said just ignore it. I prefer My Albums and Focus to find what I want. I’m sure it’s great for those that were asking for it.
When I first started using Roon I knew Roon would never support folding browsing. So, you know what I did? I stopped with the care and started randomly tossing downloads onto disks wherever it was convenient. Never to ever see this confused mess of file chaos ever again.
Oh… darn… yeah… this looks a right mess. I have a new project.
Congrats to the users! This is a great win for choice and directing limited resources into a direction the voices needed them to go. Also, playing with this a bit, it really is a nice implementation indeed. I might actually use it; once I get it cleaned up.
Having previously said that I had no need for folder browsing (which is true), I have found one benefit for me. “Go to folder” option brings up the dynamic range for each track. I don’t recall being able to access this info previously.
How can this possibly be a problem for anyone? I only use about four of the sidebar ICONS but other people use the one’s I don’t use. A feature request for the ability to customize the sidebar is the appropriate response.
I already wasn’t too fond of the icons. They do nothing for me and the side bar just gets visually busier and busier with things I don’t use. Not the end of the world but it’s ok to have preferences, I think.
I didn’t extrapolate anything, I asked a question. However, I could also demand Roon remove numerous others from the list and threaten to leave if they didn’t. My personal opinion is there is some over reaction going on here. You don’t have to click on Folders, I never will.
Well, there is an old wish for more configurability of side bar and home screen. This is just a special case of this. Of course, leaving would be a bit of an overreaction
Well I am bummed that they didn’t do what I suggested:
…which would make folders VASTLY more useful. This was a real missed opportunity. Folders as they are currently implemented are useless for me because of the lack of this functionality.
Great move. I love the folder option for finding a particular track or recording.

I have to say it looks better than I expected and as I had already tidied my folders up years ago it could well work for myself.
But I will probably just stick to My Albums that I have gotten so very used to.
Very nice work though Roon!
Whatever next!
Random album options ?
As a software architect 25 years ago, I sat through a product marketing course to help myself understand that role better. The instructor started by writing on the whiteboard, in large letters: “Your opinion, while interesting, is irrelevant”.
Her point being, what matters most is what your users think and want. It seems Roon may be finally starting to get this. Now, if only Roon would soon pay attention to us Classical listeners who still can’t edit fundamental Classical metadata after 9 years: Composition, Form, Instrumentation, etc. All of the stuff in the Composition browser. Here’s hoping!
