I very much appreciated the will to listen to Roon users, even more so letting us write very looong statements (of course if we want and i wanted…). It hopefully shows a will to keep developing our beloved software and to try to understand what userbase mostly wants. I am very worried about Harman acquisition and especially in the last few years I’ve been critical about Roon development and direction. This survey doesn’t make me much less worried but it turns a little light on the uncertain future of Roon and make me more happy for the direction that future development seems to take. I think it will be a hard task to analyze all the surveys, so I’m thankful to Roon team for the intentions and the effort that they are putting into this.

A number of subscribers reported the same issue I had when I first started the survey (I returned to it later, and tried again). Instead of advancing to the next question, it returned to those that were previously answered. They were using Safari (Mac, but that’s implied).
I thank you for repeating what michael wrote, but I don’t need a lecture on web dev (I’ve done my share). Appreciate your efforts, tongue-in-cheek and all. The “problem” isn’t browser compatibility.
My best.
What would be awesome is some sort of service/portal/etc. that would help you find similar music, or best albums of an artist…
Not automatic of course
This is my experience too. Roon has done such a good job in integrating streaming services with audio files that I don’t really think about this much anymore. In practice, I suppose that music I discovered more than 5 years ago would be file based, and anything newer than that would be streamed. I don’t really buy cds anymore.
Man, I was to hasty. I forgot half of the stuff…
A deeper integration of HQ player would be great.
and most impotantly: Roon try to get a deal with other streaming services!
and if this fails Harman should buy Qobuz.
Music streaming is cheap enough already surely?
Just over £10 a month on the yearly plan for Qobuz, it’s a bargain.
I was more thinking along the line, what happens to Roon if Qobuz and Tidal goes down. The more streaming options are available the better.
The concern does make sense. Roon’s value decreases substantially if it is not integrated with streaming services that are not niche. The two that currently fit that description are Tidal and Qobuz, which are not good examples of stability.
I don’t know that buying or starting a streaming service is the answer, as then it probably requires Roon to “favor” it over others which would accelerate potential problems with Tidal and Qobuz.
My suggestion would be that Harman/Samsung make some horse trade with a major streaming service (Amazon, Apple, etc.) in order to get an integration deal for Roon. Whether that is making Harman devices compatible directly, or a big cash payment, or whatever, it would just be better to have an integration with a stable streaming provider.
I agree with you.
Buying a streaming service is more of a fall back option when no other streaming service would be available for Roon.
I use Roon with only Qobuz and Tidal, no local files, so I see your point.
I do like the idea of Qobuz being a smaller independent company though and I like seeing them remain independent but working together with companies like Roon.
I wouldn’t want Apple music or Amazon built in and included with Roon, I don’t want to put money in either of their pockets, they are big enough imo.
I’d like to see smaller companies grow.
Outside of context I would agree with you. The issue in this case is “independent” = unstable; we do not really know how long Tidal and Qobuz will remain. It’s a golden era right now, but how long will those services last? And if their only option is to be gobbled up, will they remain integrated with Roon?
A survey will not be enough. You must carry out interviews with a select board of customers. Some of them would have plenty to say and to teach…
regards,
I’m not sure I agree with you on the independent = unstable. Samsung had their own streaming service at one point in the past, Milk, which was available in the US only I believe, they shut it down.
There have been rumours about Tidal recently I know, without foundation IMO, their app continues to be actively developed, they are migrating from MQA to FLAC for Hi-Res, there is nothing there of any concern for me.
I would be equally concerned about Roon itself, it’s by no means immune from closure, unlikely IMO but not immune.
I choose not to worry, this is why my Qobuz favourites mirror my Tidal, if one of them disappears, I have the other.
Hi, I didn’t manage to put this in the survey. Daily mixes used to be good but of late I seem to get mostly mixes that bear no relation to my listening habits whatsoever. Today most of the artists in my mixes are ones I would never listen to, I mean not even close, completely different genres from my normal listening. I would really like that fixed. I used to use this feature a lot as I found it excellent for finding new music. Sadly this is not the case anymore.
I think ROON needs to give us more visibility over the ROON Ready certification process……important for prospective buyers of new gear, and so there is no appearance of favoring one brand or another outside of Harman
That was how I completed the survey: I hope ROON listens: I just bought a NAD M66 advertised as ROON Ready and its not……
In contrast to music I rarely watch movies or series for a second or even third time. That’s why I currently dislike music streaming subscriptions. Whenever you’d like to cancel such you’ll lose all the music since you don’t own it.
But I’m in music downloads. I like e.g. the Qobuz download store. Though, you have to be careful. Sometimes, such album downloads are significantly more expensive compared to the exact same album on CD. And there are still albums you won’t find at any streaming service but on CD. That’s why I buy CDs or download albums depending on price and availability.
If the major music streaming services fail then because they are not profitable. Why should harman/Samsung invest in such potential future…?
I’m not sure about Sony’s and Onkyo’s streaming services. Are they still available?
We’ll never get this insight, believe me. This is confidential B2B business. But, as roon themselves said they definitely must speed up the certification process. I very much dislike roon ready offers with “*with future update”. It should be possible for the device manufacturers to deliver a fully roon ready device when it’s advertised as such, period.
Thank you for offering this survey. I have responded.
Here is an issue I raised in a previous feature suggestion, and alas, it did not survive. Please compare these two images.
The Roon image provides track information
exactly as shown here.
The other image is from Stream Magic, the app for Cambridge Audio’s line of products. It routinely mirrors what Roon shows with one crucial difference.
WFMT sends out scrolling track information, and I captured it to show the performers. However, on the Roon screen, the performers are not shown.
Stream Magic respects that scrolling. Roon truncates it. If an original source shows scrolling track information, Roon should relay it as provided. For subscribers who don’t want default scrolling when provided from the source, there could be a setting toggle to truncate it.
There was no easy way to raise this point in the survey.
(I suspect that WFMT does this as a solution to the well documented and intensively discussed difficulty with classical track info.)
