Description of Issue

High-res audio files in my library rarely show up when I click on Versions under a particular album. I subscribe to Tidal and Qobuz and integrate both services with Roon. When I select an album, click on Versions, almost 90% of the time what I see are the Tidal and Qobuz versions of that album. But my own (most often) higher-res library versions donā€™t appear there. Why not? The only way I can find them is by going to Artists under My Library. But they should show up under Versions ā€“ and very occasionally they do, but mostly not. Iā€™m attaching two screenshots to illustrate the problem. The album Iā€™ve selected is Mahler Symphony No. 6, with Ivan Fischer conducting, Budapest Festival Orchestra. When I search for the album and click on Versions, I see the Tidal and Qobuz versions (first screenshot). But I know I have a DSD 64 version of this album on the Internal SSD of the Roon Nucleus (which I can navigate to through Artists under My Library). Iā€™ve shown the DSD version in
the library in the second screenshot. Finally, I know that Versions does include my own high-res library files very occasionally ā€“ and Iā€™ve shown that in a third screenshot, with an album of Schubertā€™s Symphony No. 9, with Maxim Emelyanychev conducting.
Iā€™d be grateful for any help here in trying to figure this out.

Hey @Mark_Salkind,

Usually what youā€™re seeing is the result of slight metadata inconsistencies across the different versions that prevent Roon from recognizing that the albums are the same.

In the first case you presented the Ivan Fischer conducted Mahler album in your local collection wasnā€™t recognized to be the same as the Qobuz and TIDAL offerings. Thetā€™s not unusual, there can be slight differences between streaming versions and rips from Disc or purchased digital downloads.

In the second case the metadata for Emelyanychevā€™s Schubert in your library was sufficiently similar to the streaming versions to trigger an automatic grouping.

You can group versions manually from your album page. See the article linked below for instructions on how to do that:

You marked the post ā€œsolvedā€ before I had a chance to respond. Your comments are only partly helpful. Yes, I understand that small differences in metadata are why Roon doesnā€™t group versions of the same album together. But your solution isnā€™t workable because it presumes that you have all the versions of the album as ā€œfavoritesā€ or in your library. But I donā€™t ā€“ I have the hi-res version I purchased as a download in my library; the other versions are available from Tidal and Qobuz, but I havenā€™t put them in my library (why would I?). So your advice to go into Album edit and ā€œGroup Alternatesā€ doesnā€™t work.

What I have found is that many of my purchased hi-res files in my library are marked ā€œunindentified.ā€ If I click on unidentified and Iā€™m able to have Roon identify the album, then it will show up under Versions. Identifying the album usually means selecting a version with almost identical metadata, except the timings of particular movements are different.

But there are a slew of albums ā€“ notably, Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic that were remastered at 192 Hz 24 bit, and George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra, remastered at 192 Hz 24 bit, that Roon metadata services know nothing about. Paradoxically, all of these albums are easily available (at same resolution from Qobuz) from Tidal and Qobuz and show up on Roon when you conduct a search for them. I have to say that Iā€™m surprised by this. Itā€™s not a few albums, but many, and I know Roon prides itself and markets itself as a ā€˜metadataā€™ tool.

Is there any other solution to my predicament that you can suggest?

For the albums like this, you have to identify them. Left unidentified, Roon will not know what the album is to group with the Tidal/Qobuz versions.

So you just have to wait and hope that Roonā€™s metadata-base gets better ā€“ ? As I said, all of the albums Roon cannot identify are easily accessible in Roon through its Search function (from Tidal and Qobuz). It seems odd Roonā€™s database canā€™t identify them.

Your hitting a metadata roadblock that Roon cannot solve. Classical metadata is notoriously bad at the best of times and Roons metadata suppliers likely donā€™t have this in their database so Roon cannot identify it correctly and class it with the versions in Qobuz or Tidal. Roon canā€™t use that metadata as it belongs to Tidal or Qobuz. Like was suggested the best bet is to add the streaming versions, identify the album as best you can using your own metadata then group it as an alternate version and make it the primary one. Although some of Roons avid classical listeners may be able to advise.

@Mike_O_Neill is good with this stuff.

Unfortunately I am not much use, on holiday with zero cell coverage

Well, as mentioned by others you will have to manually ID them if Roon cannot do it automatically.

If you have a lot, you can create a bookmark of Unidentified albums and then tackle a few a day. That is what I did.

For example, Roon couldnā€™t ID my Solti Ring for some reason. So I had to manually ID them.

Thanks for your help here. I have the same problem with the Solti Ring. What exactly do you mean when you say you ā€œmanually ID themā€? Iā€™m not sure how you do that. For the albums Roon canā€™t identify, I have correct metadata and cover art ā€“ but not clear how I can manually identify them so Roon will identify them --??

Thanks again.

Thank you for your help.
