I have been trying to find an answer to my issue for over a week and although I have found some posts with similar issues I have yet to see anyone resolve this problem. This only seems to be an issue affecting some systems.
I have an Intel based system running an 11th Gen i7-1165G7 (mobile CPU) with Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC version 21H2 (2021). With Roon installed and setup as a core server, the ‘RAATserver’ service is using 20% + CPU usage whether idle or when playing music. I have tested this on 3 identical systems running for weeks. If configured as just an endpoint then the ‘roonserver’ service has the same high CPU usage of 20%+.
This is listed in Task Manager as Very High CPU usage (for either service) and it does result in a lot of power usage and heat from the CPU. Everything plays fine regardless without issue, but this fanless system is producing way to much heat for comfort. It would seem this it not a problem at all for most users. CPU usage is usually only 1 to 3 % at idle or playback on most Windows based systems.
I am not sure if this is related to the version of Windows in use. I am hoping someone else who is using Win 10 LTSC 2021 might be able to help.

Greetings, I am working with a company called Cen.Grand to release a new music server. I am trying to get it ready to send in for certification.
It is an Intel based system running an 11th Gen i7-1165G7 (mobile CPU) with Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC version 21H2 (2021).
Do you have any suggestions to what might be causing this?
Does the high CPU usage start immediately after you perform a fresh restart/reboot of the Roon app? Does the issue only happen on one specific page or view in Roon?
Thank you for your reply. It happens immediately after staring without even opening Roon appliance. As soon the the system starts and RAATserver service starts up it is using 20%+ CPU usage.
Thanks for confirming, can you please let us know the exact local time + date when you next notice the CPU spike, so that we can enable diagnostics for your account and see if there are any clues? Also, I noticed you have two Roon Servers tied to you account, can you please confirm the name of the affected one? Thanks!
I have a similar problem here with Linux 6.8.0-47-generic Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS on a Intel(R) Core™ i5-2500T. RAATServer consumes 100% on 1 of the 4 cores even when no playing any music. Didn’t find the root cause so far. Occasionally it comes up right after starting the system. Sometimes after a while.
I just fired the system back up. I had it off for a few days. The server is named CenGrand-GLD. As soon as I turn the system on the service ‘RAAT server’ is using about 20% CPU usage. It doesn’t matter if the system is idle or playing music. I’ll leave it on so you can check.
P.S. I have Chrome Remote Desktop installed if you would like direct access to the machine. Just let me know.
Thanks for sending those over! After our team was able to investigate further, it looks like RAATServer is continuously searching for the default audio device, but isn’t able to connect.
As a next step in troubleshooting, could you try changing the default audio device in Windows to something completely different?
After that, disable this endpoint in Roon and see if the issue persists. Let us know if that makes a difference! Thank you
Roon has no problem finding and using the ASIO driver for the PCIe audio board Cen.Grand has designed. However, windows can not find any audio device and therefore there is no default audio device for the windows sound system. This is a custom motherboard and it has no on board audio. So I can not assign windows a default sound device. Could this be the problem? Roon is asking windows what audio devices do you have available and well there are none!
The LTSC version of windows 10 does not support / recognize ASIO audio devices within the windows sound system (like Win 10 home and pro). This is normally a good thing for a dedicated device like this as you do not want the windows sound system interfering with a direct audio driver between software and hardware. It would seem however Roon server might cause windows to continue an endless goose chase for audio devices.
Hi @Arthur_Power,
Thanks! We’re still investigating this ticket but rest assured that your case has not been forgotten. We’ll let you know here when we have an update for you.
You have my apologies for glazing over this mention in your post. Unfortunately, no Roon apps are licensed for distribution on third-party embedded devices. They are exclusively licensed for end-user installation on general-purpose computing devices.
We do this because we have no insight into any OS customizations, etc, that may impact roon performance or create support issues. Further, we cannot access the file system, device drivers, logs, etc, on embedded devices, making them difficult to support.
So we can’t offer any support in this case. If you have questions about this policy, please contact partners@roonlabs.com
As mentioned before I am trying to prepare this unit to send to you guys for Roon certification so we can sell these in the US. I have helped Matrix Audio get new models certified and they were running Ubuntu Linux. CenGrand decided to go with Windows LTSC. How do we proceed?
