High CPU usage when screen turns off

I know this is an old thread, but I have the same problem. I have run ROON for a year or two and now suddenly my CPU start running when screen turns off. I only use the PC for ROON so normaly the screen is closed. I am writing here in the hope that one of you has found a solution you can share.

I split your post off from the previous topic since it was an old thread and much has changed. We were not able to reproduce this in the QA lab in the past, but can you share details regarding your affected device, display driver info, number of screens, etc?

Hi Noris

Thanks for your replay.

I am running Roon on a Hp EliteBook with Intel core I7. 4 GB ram. Windows 10 Pro.
The driver for the screen is:
Procucent: Microsoft
Filversion: 10.0.19041.1151 (WinBuild. 160101,0800)

There is no update for that.
I have no attached screen other that the build in.

I have attach a Samsung Portable SSD T5, to the laptop that contains my music.

I have run Roon on the laptop for a long time without problem, but now it use a lot of CPU when I close the screen. This is only happen when Roon is running. When the screen is open there is no problem. Roon is the only thing running on that PC.

Hope we can find the solution.

Thanks for those details! Can you please let us know the following information as well?

Can you please share a screenshot of your Windows System Information → Displays tab?
Please reproduce the issue and note the next time + date that the issue occurs and let us know on this thread.
Can you confirm the setup further - are you saying the issue happens when you close your laptop lid, when you turn off a monitor attached to the laptop or when the laptop enters screensaver mode? Or does the issue occur in all three cases?

Hi agin Norris.

I will try to answar your question.

Lets start with question 2) . It happen everly time I close the lid. I have attaced a picture, of the cpu usage. The first 20 second the lid was open, then I close it for 20 sec. and then open it again, and you can see the CPU usage rise, when the lid is close. The CPU usage is high as long as the lid is open.

Question 3) I have no monitor attached to the laptop, I only use the lid. When the screensaver is on, the cpu usage is low.

Question 1) The link you send about a sccrenshut ended with a 404… Please send an update.

I happened to come across this thread and realized I may have the same issue, showing itself in a different way.

I am running Roon with a headless setup - an Intel NUC running Windows that has no monitor connected to it. For a long time I have experienced Roon having really high memory & CPU usage (I could always tell because the NUC’s fan would go crazy), but always just thought it was “typical” for Roon.

Out of curiosity I plugged a monitor into the NUC 2 days ago and have not experienced any of the spiking memory & CPU usage.

Here is a screenshot of the Display tab - note this is AFTER plugging the monitor in (I don’t know if it would change if I unplugged it).

Thank you for sharing those details!

I have updated the linked article to another one, this 404 should be fixed, thanks for letting me know.

This is a very interesting observation, I was discussing this with our dev team and perhaps the absence of a display is causing Roon to update the graphics at a greater rate than when Roon is able to find a display and match the refresh rate of that display.

@Vog / @Mikael_Sorensen - Can I please ask that you reproduce the issue and let me know the exact local time + date you run into this issue next time? I would like to see if there is any additional clues in your Roon logs afterward, thank you.

Thanks for investigating this.

It’s now been nearly two weeks (one day short), and I can confirm that ever since plugging in the monitor the problem has not reoccurred.

I can try unplugging the monitor, but in my case catching the “Roon spiking memory & CPU” in such a way that it would show in the logs is trickier than what @Mikael_Sorensen is experiencing - I have to be in the room and notice the fan activating. So let’s see if Mikael (or anyone who can just close their laptop lid) can provide enough info. If not, I can try.

Now I have some dokumentation.
I started roon wait about 2 min, close the lid for about 10 sec, open agin. I close the lid 15:26:30.
I will attach the log and a video to show what is happening. There you can also see the time.

Thanks for the information @Mikael_Sorensen , we are trying to see if we can reproduce this in the QA lab. We have not yet seen this behavior occur yet, but we will try different display settings to see if we can see it occur on our end. In case this is related - can you provide some info on your power plan settings? Are you using Power Saver, High Performance, or something else?

Thank you for trying to find the problem. I do not use any speciel power saver, high performance or something like that. Just standard windows.

I have attached some screenshot from my power settings. Hope you understand, my windows is in Danish.

Can you please confirm if you run the Intel Driver Update Tool and update drivers, are you still able to reproduce this issue without the monitor?

Hi @noris.

I regularly run the Intel Driver & Support Assistant, so everything is up to date (and usually is).

I will add that I’m now experiencing the new freezing/crashing issue others have identified as well in other threads, so I’m not 100% sure my ability to test. But it seemed for a while that attaching the monitor had minimized the problem - hard to tell now.

We have been able to intermittently reproduce some similar behavior, but we have not been able to nail down reproduction steps or find out how to make this occur at will. We will keep looking into this and let you know once further information is needed, thank you!
