How can I avoid titles tagging when I tag the album of a classical box set only?

I like to tag different 3th symphonies of Gustav Mahler. Normally it works for single albums, so I see only the album display in my collection (I call it “album level”). But if I tag a third album which is part of a bigger boxset (see my example) via “add to tag” option, all 24 titles of this album will also be tagged and listed (see my image link).

How can I avoid titles tagging (title level) when I want to tag the album only?

Thanks

@Martin_Webster Is this really a support case?! I assumed that I did something wrong, thatswhy I asked in the discussion zone, but there was no feedback.

Are there others with the same issue? I hope I must not raise a feature request. For me it is a bug: If I tag an album, I only want to see one album entry under my tag…

Use the #support category when you have a problem or have a problem using Roon.

I suspect you may not have had a response in the other category because you haven’t provided an example–please post images in the forum–and didn’t mention classical box sets in the subject.

Please note that I am a volunteer community moderator and neither represent Roon nor provide support (although I help where I can.)

Thanks for your hints, which I just considered.

You are combining album level tags with track level tags which is giving you a result you do not want.

Roon uses a different logic when dealing with performances and compositions. If you click on the library symbols roon will display yours and your streaming providers performances of Mahler’s 3rd:

So, according to your screen shot you have 17 local Mahler 3’s and 67 available from your streaming provider. If you click on the library symbol with a 17 you will see something similar to this with various display options:

Thanks for your answer, but I don´t think so. I only did tag the 3. Symphony from the classical box set of Abbado, but automatically all tracks are tagged unintentionally, what I didn’t want.
What have I to do to get only the mentioned album under my tag? If I tag a single symphony on album level (= no part of a box set), all is fine and the tracks are not tagged and not listed under the tag.

For Roon database purposes, an identified box set is a single album unto itself. It is not made up of constituent albums, only discs. And as far as I know, you cannot tag discs individually.

Yes, it seems so. Thanks for clarification. But this is annoying, because the “Add to tag” option is available on box set level, album level and track level, what suggests to me that I can tag every single album of a box set individually. I want to collect (tag) albums instead of tracks for a better overview.

When I highlight a symphony and tag it, all tracks are tagged. It doesn’t matter if it is an album with a single work or it is part of a box set. So if I highlight Jansons Mahler 3 in your screenshot and apply the tag “Mahler 3”, roon will apply a tag to all the tracks just the same as a box-set.

Does your roon work differently? I can only assume that you are tagging the album rather than the tracks to avoid this duplication. To my knowledge you cannot do what you are trying to do.

If you want to display all albums containing a Mahler 3 then you need to click either the “disk” or “library” symbol as above. If you prefer to see a display of album covers rather than a list of compositions there is a switch in that screen. You should see something similar to:

Abbado’s Mahler 3 is readily available as a standalone two disc album. Just tag that instead.

Correct.
In my next example I reached my goal. You see 6 different albums of Beethoven’s third symphony, all tagged with the same tag on album level. It looks better than 24 track entries.

I am afraid I must raise a feature request to get my wish.

Roon has already grouped all your Beethoven 3’s so you don’t need to “tag” them. What you need to do is “identify” them when roon’s auto-identification process has failed. When you do that you will end up with a grid of albums similar to the one you have manually tagged:

But in addition on the same page as this grid roon will give you a lot more which you can use as a launch pad to explore your library:

Roon works quite differently from other players you may be used to. It is far from perfect but in general you get more from roon if you go along with its logic rather than trying to “bend” it to fit previous habits and ways of working.

I guess there is a misunderstanding. I tag specific albums to group and remember only my favourites, e. g. those 6 recordings in opposite to all existing (refused) 36 recordings, which are much more than 6.

There are change requests to be able to heart/favorite performances of compositions going back many years. At the moment if you heart one performance you heart all. Your work-around is what I do and I suspect many others.
