How do I set Nucleus One system time

I have been reviewing Nucleus One server logs lately to track down a playback problem. The time stamps in the log file suggest that the server is set to UTC time. That makes parsing logs a little confusing.

Is there any way to set that from the Roon app? Or do I have to get to the command line of the server to do it with a linux command?

Thanks

Basically, you can’t

But you can of course create a support issue. Roon will gladly help out in diagnosing your issue, if you explain it. And also to interpret your log files.

Please, be reminded, timestamps in system logs may be UTC in general, independent from any system time set. But roon’s support will tell you.

Hello @Kevin_MacDonald,

Thank you for reaching out to Roon Support.

The time on a Nucleus cannot be changed manually — it is automatically synchronized using NTP. This is expected behavior for all Roon OS–based devices.

Regarding the log timestamps:
Roon logs include both UTC and your local time in every entry. This is intentional.

For example:

12/02 07:38:19 [Local 12/01 23:38:19] Trace: [music] [playlist] query returned 6 Sooloos.Broker.Api.PlaylistItem(s)
  • The first timestamp (12/02 07:38:19) is UTC
  • The value inside brackets (Local 12/01 23:38:19) is your local device time

If something still seems unclear about the timestamps, feel free to let us know — we’re happy to clarify further.

But my logs show the UTC time and local system time as being the same. Therefore I believe the LOCAL time of the server has simply never been set. You don’t think so?

Hello @Kevin_MacDonald,

The timestamp on your Nucleus isn’t set manually — it syncs automatically via NTP and adjusts based on IP-based geolocation.

I also noticed that Tailscale is currently enabled on your system. Tailscale can sometimes interfere with proper NTP resolution or geolocation, which may cause the local time to appear incorrect.

Could you please temporarily disable Tailscale and check whether the local time updates correctly afterward?

Additionally, is this issue affecting your listening experience in any way?

Hello @vadim,

I am unfamiliar with Tailscale. As yet I have installed nothing on my Nucleus One nor modified settings on it in any way. I have only interacted with the server via the Roon apps. If Tailscale is present I did not put it there. How do I disable it?

The system time issue is NOT impacting my listening experience. This is strictly a ‘power user’ thing that would allow me to parse logs more easily the next time I venture down this path.

Hello @Kevin_MacDonald

Tailscale is preinstalled in your system. It is not active until you are logged in to the Tailscale account via the WebUI.

The article for references:

Would you kindly temporarily log out from the Tailscale if active, using the WebUI and restart the unit multiple times.

If this will not help, regrettably, there are no other ways to update the local TZ as the UTC is hardcoded into the Nucleus OS.

Hi @Kevin_MacDonald,

I recommend submitting a feature request where other users can vote. That’s a formal and less ephemeral pathway for the Product team to assess the feature, since threads in the Support category eventually timeout and close.
