They now want $5 a month per person for each of the 6 accounts in the family plan, sounds like a deal to me.
Or $2.50 per person on the cd quality tier.
Am I missing something, this sounds like incredible value for money.
I don’t think they tacked on an additional amount, just stopped the discount meaning people pay the standard fee.
I am not Jim, I have also written more than once that I prefer Qobuz and use tidal only to fill the gaps in my library. I am not an employee of Qobuz either.
I have also written that all music streaming services represent good value for the customer, depending on the eco system you use.
@Grasshopper , if that’s the case, then Tidal has nothing to offer me. I only subscribed for Roon Radio, which works much better with both Qobuz and Tidal. My best.
You have to decide whether it’s worth it to you, on balance I don’t use tidal much, I have a large library on a Nas, then Qobuz and tidal as a backup for any gaps.
I only use the hi-fi tier and £10 a month is worth it to me.
So with the Qobuz yearly plan and roon monthly sub, it totals about £33 a month for me in total, which is about $41 USD a month.
I’d say it’s worth it considering how much I use it.
Returning to the original question. Tidal’s competitors offer high res streaming for about $11 per month. Tidal offers the same, inexplicably, for $20 per month.
Now that MQA is dying and Tidal has adopted the same FLAC files as everyone else, will Tidal adjust their prices to be more competitive?
And if not, why?
I like Tidal because Tidal Connect provides greater device flexibility than Quboz. But I can’t help but wonder if, for me, Tidal Connect is worth nearly double the monthly fee.
Tidal connect is the difference and the larger library in some genres than Qobuz, whether it’s worth it to the individual is subjective.
On the hifi plus tier they used to give 10% of the subscription directly to the artist, no one else did that AFAIK, they stopped that in favour of another royalty scheme I am unfamiliar with, so some additional costs may go there.
I get tidal connect on the CD tier too, that’s enough for me based on how irregularly I use tidal these days.
The question could also be from a different perspective “How does Tidal justify continuing losses to shareholders of Block/Square?”
A failed class action lawsuit by the shareholders shows that they have some heartburn with the company’s situation and mismanagement.
I’m not sure that $ 19.99 is going to fly in the marketplace but it’s obvious that they cannot survive with what they have been doing ( Best Buy thing etc. ) it’s good to have competition and multiple choices. Hopefully they don’t go the way of MQA and the dodo bird.
Other streaming services ask 15, 11 or 10$. The 20$ service offers nothing more than the others. In the long term Tidal will lose subscribers. That is how capitalism works.
This is no argument for paying more $ to Tidal. Choose a cheaper service and spend the saved money to a local charity. This helps much more for people in need.
You’re forgetting the gapless connect protocol I mentioned earlier which supports hi res streams, does Qobuz have that yet ? Does Deezer have it for cd quality audio? What bitrates dues airplay support? 24/192?
Is Spotify lossless yet?
Well, I couldn’t help myself. I reactivated my Tidal subscription, but switched from Best Buy Hi-Fi Plus annual at $120 to Tidal Hi-Fi monthly at $10.99. I guess loyalty can be a liability at times. I’ve had Tidal since before I got Roon 4 years ago.
I changed my Roon Tidal setting to Hi-Fi and everything seems to be coming in at 16/44.1. I’ll be sure to use Tidal when away from home to limit cellular data use. I’m not sure my 75 year old ears and 50 year old speakers can tell a difference anyway.
EDIT: I’m pretty well pleased with Tidal HiFi for $10.99 and Qobuz Studio for $10.83. This gives me high resolution Qobuz when at home using AT&T U-Verse internet and CD quality Tidal when away from home using Verizon cellular. I have the same 1600 albums on each as well as Apple Music free from Verizon.
EDIT: I just received my first $10.99 charge from Tidal on 10/11/23. So, Tidal is working as expected.
I switched to Qobuz once it became available in Canada. Sound quality is noticeably better than Tidal. But recently I added back Tidal for two reasons: 1) those 8 My mixes are so much better for music discovery; and 2) there were a few tracks that I love that are missing on Qobuz.
So keeping both services and waiting to see if Tidal Hi Res flac is as good as Qobuz. Right now, however, only 6% of Tidal tracks are actually Hi Res… while many more of Qobuz are HR.
