Description of Issue

After years of enjoying my CDRips in AAC, Roon stops playing them without explanation or anything. In fact it even breaks playing back any tother type of file, after trying to play an AAC file has failed. And it turns out to be a deliberate action from Roon for (I assume) a valid business reason. This in itself is unacceptable. Roon disables its own software, while not handling the created exception with any grace. The user is completely left in the dark. Shame on you.

Now for a solution. I’m stuck in a web of noise about various hardware, various software, OSes, what is ROCK? I want to be a simple user. Within the noise I picked up that there is a third party (volunteer!) solution called FFmpeg. However, none of the articles I found apply to my (I assume simplest) situation.

On my NAS I found a folder RoonServer. How do I apply the FFmpeg solution?

Lazily, I will point you to A Roon on (Synology) NAS Primer, which has all that info.

But your problem is caused by a legal battle that Synology went thru this year, not by Roon.

Wow, DDPS, although I am grateful you responded to my post, the linked article is A LOT OF NOISE with very little relevance to my rather pointed question.

Fair enough. I’m not here to point fingers. But at some point Roon became aware that a major platform in their ecosystem removed a component that they relied upon to enjoy a format that is quite significant in the digital music world. The Roon world. Roon did not add anything to gracefully handle such a situation, there is also no clear road forward to solve this.

My mundane question remains: How do I apply the FFmpeg solution to my NAS with the folder RoonServer?

Oh and any other solution would be appreciated too.

The basics are in my very opening post there - “ * Using FFmpeg “git master” build from John Van Sickle unpacked and installed on my SSD’s RoonOnNAS > bin directory”

If the terminal device does not support AAC, try the following:

  • Convert the files:
    • Covert the audio to MP3 or WAV format. You can use third-party converters, such as XMedia Recode (Windows) or Handbrake (macOS, Windows, or Linux).

You are making up a lot of things without any basis in reality

Read the posts. As you are quite dismissive in tone, whether intended or not, you probably won’t be getting a lot of further help.
