If Roon added ONE dream feature tomorrow, what would it be? (2026 edition)

Being able to use Roon at my office (located in a different place from my home) without having to pay for a second license… For example, a Roon Arc type app but for desktop (a feature that has actually been requested many times on this forum)!

Ahhh that would completely change my life. Right now, I use Roon Arc from my phone at the office, but it’s really not ideal…

My top no.1 dream feature is a clear cut case:

Possibility to edit discography metadata (for albums which are not in my library), particularly removing albums/singles which are assigned to the wrong artist due to flawed metadata provided bei Qobuz or particularly Tidal.

One of roon´s best features for me is browsing the back catalogue of a musician or composer, and an avalanche of wrongly assigned albums is really annoying. Example (singer Fish, ex-Marillion):

67 (!) out of 73 singles/EPs listed, are not by Fish. If there is any chance to remove them, hide them or edit metadata, I would be grateful.

If this is not possible, for whatever reason, I would love to see the multi-track composition assignment improved, in the sense of some routine checking whether a recording of a composition is complete or just a track. Example:

I can assure you, there are no 79 recordings of `le Nozze di Figaro´ by Vittorio Gui, and the opera lasts for more than 4 minutes or 38 seconds (actually, roon ´knows´ that a complete recording should have a duration around 160 minutes). It is obvious that the internal flag ´complete recording´ is falsely set, and all 79 tracks of the album appear as 79 complete recordings of their own. Other complete recordings do not appear due to wrong flag. Admittingly, with Tidal the issue is more widespread than with Qobuz.

That’s possible if you don’t need to use the office server and the home server at the same time, as you can switch the license between the two instances.

(However, the databases will be different if you don’t continually back up one server and restore on the other, which can be annoying. A desktop ARC would get around that)

They Used to. Earlier versions of Roon, in some ways had a better UI, some ways worse. I wan’t happy when “Theater Mode” got deprecated for the existing “Now Playing” screen. I think the original screen was much cleaner.

Being able to write notes about albums and/or tracks: “This is the slow rubato track that’s good for late-night listening.” Helpful if you listen to a lot of new music–or just need a memory aid!

Gonna go with one form, and one function:

  • A borderless windows client like Plexamp

  • Roon ARC Bit perfect playback on android DAPs like Plexamp

Doesn’t it do that if you switch to fullscreen (not maximized window)? Maybe I’m missing something but that’s what it does on the Mac (and IIRC previously when I used it in WINE on Linux) as far as I can tell.

It does, and I should’ve been more specific.

Hate to keep using it as an example, but Plexamp maintains a border less appearance regardless of window size.

It also has a very aesthetically pleasing design for an app being used in a column type format on either side of a display. I like to have a small area of the screen dedicated to a player while I work (sort of like the old Winamp days).

Example of Plexamp (far left) Roon (second left) and other application.

If Roon add the ability to export only playlists’ m3u files without copying the music files, or at least to copy them without changing the metadata. It’s really annoying when Roon put all that junk from TiVo into my carefully managed metadata.
But it seems I’m the only one who finds this annoying, as I haven’t seen any requests to add this feature.

I’ve said it for years now, but I would like to see a bottom’s up redo/rethink of the UI. Less clicks to get you places, all links needed on every page/screen, when I delete an album take me back to the library immediately (see less clicks), perhaps a tab style interface so not so much navigating when I want to browse while an album’s playing (and get back there quickly), less wasted space, more integration of discovery features for less confusion, and so on.

Never going to happen, I know.

This is a good thread, @Leon_snell. I hope it gets Roon eyeballs on it.

Some of are a little jaded and weary because of issues that have been known and unaddressed for years. It’s a good thing to flip the script and generate some positivity.

I’m torn between these three:

  • Quality - long-standing architectural and feature issues
  • Transparency - Clarity about vision, areas of investment, consistent recognition of issues
  • Engagement - More presence on the forum, showing up on podcasts/videos, doing AMAs, etc.

If I had to pick one, I’d pick Quality. More specifically, I’d pick “Networking and Connectivity”. This is a big one. This is discovery, initial connection, working over WiFi even if that means adaptive streaming, solving ARC even if that means proxying, possibly vlans, diagnostics in the app to show LAN and maybe WAN latency and quality, etc.)

Why do I want this? I want every new user to have a delightful and frictionless experience. I want this forum to pivot away from fundamental network tech support over to joy about music, the product and the listening experiences it enables. I want to be able to recommend Roon to everyone I know. I want the sales consultant I work with at one of the premier audio dealers in my area to stop saying that he doesn’t recommend Roon to his customers because he doesn’t want to shoulder the tech support burden.

That’s my #1

For me, Roon is what I want. When I play albums and songs there is a lot of information in the credits and all the links that help me to discover other music. I don’t need more.
When I regard what I pay for the music and what the composers and musicians get and compare this with the software Roon supplies then the price for the software is to high. Lower the price. That’s my dream.

Aha, I wasn’t around then. And it took me ages to get the Roon thing, I was happily wrestling Audirvana until maybe not even 2 years ago. But yes, that’s a lot closer to what I mean.

The BlueOS screen is pretty great when it comes to my use-case but the better one was still one I had tweaked for Musicbee. In fact I still think Musicbee has the best interface and clean look of them all. It’s simple enough in everyday use but also allows you to go one step down and really customise things.

But I don’t know. I’m highly resistant to new stuff. When I get used to something I’m among the last people to finally get the new way.

Brill!

(And here’s the reason I’ve not really used it and forget it’s there….

….generally use my iPhone to drive Roon)

Now that you mention it… yes. I would like it to tell me if there’s newer releases from that band/artist. I often do that manually… I usually have the whole library playing randomly because it’s a way for me to hear stuff I had forgotten about and many times I go “Wow, these guys! I really like them, I wonder if they have released something new since I last looked”.

I don’t use streaming services, it’s all local files. I do have LastFM integration but must be years now since I last checked it, maybe they already have that information?

Scrolling track titles, please.

If a source scrolls its track titles, Roon should respect that design decision rather than truncate the information. An example is WFMT, the classical radio stream out of Chicago.

This feature could have an on/off switch in settings.

Yeah, there should generally be a “new from artists in your library” section on Home.

p.s. this is a great idea for a discussion thread.

More streaming stability through not hard-wired network connections as WiFi would be the only feature for me that is missing.

Sorry, are you saying that I should have it already or that it isn’t there but should be?

BTW, now I can’t find the LastFM thingy anywhere… is it gone?
