If you have a TV in your Audio room does it impact your sound? If so how do you resolve without removing TV (wall mounted?) A few sound treatment companies say blankets? What say ye?
Something anyone affected should answer for himself.
Generally speaking: Your Wall mounted TV is probably already the best feasible way to go.
If you’re about to replace your TV at some point in the future, think about swapping it for a beamer, their projector screens might be less problematic in general and if you’re really concerned, get a motorized screen so it is no longer in the way at all for critical music listening.
Other person’s ( Paul McGowan, PS Audio) opinion:
PS: I personally am in the beamer faction.
Thanks for the reply and video! I’m looking at adding some sound treatment and the TV is already mounted on the wall between my maggie 2.7i’s. It sounds like when I want to do my serious listening I’ll need to recess the TV back as close to the wall as I can get it and cover it with something?
Try it out. Hang a cloth over it and if you can hear a (positive) difference think about a more permanent and visually appealing solution.
I’ll let you know when I get everything completed. Thanks!
I had a blanket over my TV and basotect absorber panels in front and behind it.
Still removing the TV from the Setup made a very noticeable positive difference.
The TV is now in the bedroom with my old Stereo equipment. Living room is 2.0 only
Thanks for the reply! I’ll try that. Being disabled (w 6 grandkids lol) makes it hard to make it an audio only space. But so far all the kids love to listen to music and talk audio with me. Ages 11- 1. The 1 year old and I have some of the best conversations! Cheers!
I also use Maggies (LRS) and have a 60” TV (on a stand) between them.
I thought that such a setup would negatively impact the sound, so I tried covering the TV with a heavy blanket. To my surprise, this sucked the life out of the sound rather than improving it, so I don’t cover the TV.
I would strongly suggest you experiment to find what works best for you and your setup/room rather than going by others suggestions (different rooms/setups/speakers/preferences) and assumptions (like I initially did).
If there’s a wall behind the TV, the reflective properties of the wall and the TV are probably not all that different. It’s even possible that a slightly flexible TV surface is preferable to a reflective hard concrete wall, for instance.
It will probably also depend on whether the TV is in line with the speakers or farther back, anyway.
Like others said, try a blanket and see what changes, if anything.
With my 65“ oled going basically from speaker to speaker I did always feel like the „phantom center „ is more foreward.. especially vocals more in your face …
Without the TV I have definitely a better soundstage.. everything feels more 3D.. there is more depth .
Never going back
Interesting stuff. Never even condidered the TV between my speakers could possibly impact sound.
I have my TV on a different wall than my music system speakers. It’s at right angles to them and effectively at the first reflection point for my main listening position. I have a couple of lightweight (5ocm/ 2 inch) absorption panels that i place in front of the TV when i am listening to music and remove them when watching the TV. Works really well for me.
Me neither! Still it is a great thing to be able to worry about. Some of us have audio rooms and some of us also have a dedicated cinema room. I just have a living room which has to accommodate all kinds of uses.
Obviously, I have many things to consider and experiments to make. Both of which will require hours of listening. Darn my luck! I’ll report back my conclusions. Thanks for all of your thoughts.
